 I offer this option knowing well how difficult it is to find a singer with the particular sound you might be looking for. I sing most solo work in a lower register; so, if you're looking for a first soprano opera singer, I'm not it. However, if you're looking for an alto powerhouse, I might be. It is perfectly acceptable to ask for a recording and then decide to go another way, as hearing someone sing is obviously the most effective way of knowing whether or not their voice is the right fit for your event.
