As Nigeria prepares to hold its seventh consecutive general election in February 2023, insecurity, cyberbullying, voter inducement, hate speech, and destruction of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) sensitive materials have become key issues. There are indications that armed groups in the northeast, northwest and southeast where banditry, terrorism, and secessionist agitations are rampant will be instrumentalized to perpetrate political violence during the general election. Already, attacks on campaign convoys, denial of rally venues, and online bullying by party supporters are markers of a violent election. Holding credible polls in an environment that guarantees the security of voters and electoral officers is a task that should be accomplished by all Nigerians.
This roundtable discussion on the 2023 general election is organised by the Nigeria Watch team of IFRA-Nigeria. It will provide insights on issues of election fraud, corruption, information management and campaign frames, gender and vulnerable ones and political violence before and during the election.
