We are extremely excited and proud to announce that Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council ("OCIC") will hold our inaugural Lunar New Year parade on January 29, 2022. Lunar New Year is celebrated by two billion people in the United States and throughout the world. On September 30, 2022, Governor Newsom officially signed AB 2596 into law! When Governor Newsom made the announcement, tears, cheers and bells were ringing throughout our state as every API community started to celebrate. Our nation's past history included some very discriminatory laws against API communities including, Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment during WW2. This new law is a giant step forward in correcting some of the wrongs done to our communities. We applaud the governor for standing firm to his commitment towards equity and diversity.
As you are aware, Oakland Chinatown is one of the several communities struck hard in the recent years with Covid shutdown and anti-Asian crimes. Our residents and merchants were attacked physically, verbally, and emotionally which led to the formation of several Stop Asian Hate organizations to provide assistance and services to the victims of violence. We want to sincerely thank Governor Newsom for signing this historic bill (AB 2596) in recognizing and addressing the inequalities perpetuated to our communities. Needless to say, API communities are ecstatic about the new holiday and communities throughout the state are planning and holding Lunar New Year celebrations. Oakland Chinatown is no exception!
We would appreciate your assistance with the parade; we are in need of volunteers to block off the parade route, assist with setting up street markers, and to help out with monitoring parade acts and performances on the day of the event.
