Explore strategies for fostering healthy nutritional habits within your family by attending this specially designed class for resource caregivers. If you experience stress in getting your child to eat a balanced meal, these classes will introduce you to methods to make mealtimes a positive experience for everyone. This series will dive into children's different responses and eating habits depending on developmental ages/stages, trauma and stress impacts, and everything in between.

Through demonstrations and try at home activities, you can get new ideas for healthy delicious snacks and meals the whole family can enjoy! Tackle nutrition and feeding challenges in foster care by introducing and implementing new creative approaches that promote healthy mental well-being, physical health, and interpersonal family dynamics.

Weeks 1 & 2: Positive Feeding for Resource Families

  • Make mealtime and feeding your foster child a less stressful, positive experience for everyone
  • How to create easy, delicious, mood and energy-enhancing snacks
  • Learn about children’s different developmental ages and stages and how to responsively feed them

Weeks 3 & 4: Nutrition for the Whole Family 

  • How to eat and feed your family nutritiously
  • How to plan nutritious meals and building healthier habits at home
  • Learn strategies for budget-friendly shopping
  • How to address concerns about body weight and size
Weeks 5 & 6 Toxic Stress and Nourishment
  • How trauma and toxic stress impacts health and eating habits
  • Learn trauma-informed way to address children’s concerning eating behaviors, including picky eating
  • How good nutrition can support mental wellbeing
  • Lean simple strategies for selecting affordable and nutritious foods
We recommend attending classes in order as each week builds on the previous class; However, if you prefer you can attend an individual topic instead (2 weeks)

This training fulfils:  Section 8-01 (e) (1) of the Written Directives for Resource Parents. Certificates will be provided to those that complete each class topic and registration materials.

Your Instructors:
Renee Cervantez has held various titles and roles throughout her life and whether in her personal life, career, or volunteer work, her favorite is helping people grow and learn. Renee has a master’s degree in education with a specialization in family & community services. She has a bachelor’s degree in social science with a minor in child development. Renee has lived in Ventura County all her life and is happy to raise her family here as well. She lives with her husband and their three children. Renee and her husband, Joseph became foster parents (and now a RFA home) in 2015, and they have been blessed by adoption 3 times!

Nora Hayes has been a public speaker/educator since 1989. Her public speaking career began in the prison system, where she learned a great deal about interacting with her audience – a tool she still uses today when teaching classes. In 1996, Nora became a health educator working in the medical field, where she specialized in childbirth, parenting, health and safety classes. Nora is a foster/adoptive mom and has a teenaged daughter. Despite the many challenges of parenting, Nora has always loved being a mom. She enjoys very much helping others navigate through their parenting journey.
