USSP Code of Conduct 2021

MIssion Statement

The Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (USSP) is a multidisciplinary course that integrates lectures, symposia, fieldtrips, tutorials, and in-class exercises on the many areas of paleoclimatology and paleoceanography.

Key topics include geochemical and paleobiologic proxies, chronostratigraphy, biogeochemical cycling, the mechanisms of regional and global paleoclimate change on various time scales, statistical analysis of paleoclimate data, and all aspects of deep-time climate modeling.

The goals of USSP are twofold: (1) to cross-train graduate students from disparate disciplines, providing participants with an advanced working knowledge on proxy data and models (including their uncertainties) and their use in evaluating past climates, and (2) to be an engine for innovation in – and cultivation of – the field of paleoclimatology, and a springboard for its future leaders.

This document articulates the mission of USSP, and to reaffirm our strong commitment to foster the most supportive, healthy learning environment for all students and faculty in our community.

Code of Conduct:

An essential component of the innovative structure of USSP is the integration of many formal and informal opportunities for learning and mentoring (classroom, fieldtrips, USSP social events, informal lunches and dinners, etc.). Embodied in the spirit of USSP is the principle that we are – together – a community of learners, and that the intellectual development of all participants (students and faculty) should be supported at all times. To facilitate this, all participants (students and faculty) are required to abide by the following guidelines for the duration of the summer school, both inside and outside of the classroom. It is pertinent that you read this code of conduct and agree to these guidelines to participate in the USSP.

• All individuals (students and faculty) are committed to providing a welcoming, supportive environment in which all students and faculty are able to succeed and thrive.

• The USSP constitutes an international community, and we each come with our own culturally- informed perspectives, and biases. All participants agree to be respectful of the opinions, views, and rights of others.

• Harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary comments or jokes will not be tolerated. Harassment includes unwelcome and sustained/repeated disruption of teaching, studying, or presentation; inappropriate physical contact, sexual attention, or innuendo; deliberate intimidation; stalking. Offensive comments or put-downs related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion will not be tolerated. We have a zero-tolerance policy on hate speech.

• All individuals (students and faculty) agree to support the physical and emotional well-being of fellow USSP participants, both inside the classroom and outside the classroom.

All USSP instructors, students, and visitors have a shared responsibility in meeting the spirit and letter of these guidelines and shall share any questions, concerns, and/or observations ASAP with established USSP Ombudspersons or co-directors.

Consequences:

All complaints will be investigated by a USSP Board, who will advise co-directors on what action to take. Engaging in prohibited behaviour will result in USSP organisers taking appropriate action, including warning the offender and/or expulsion from the current program and future USSPs.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the co-directors, Ombuds-people, or one of the USSP board immediately.
