TVG (University of Oxford) AI Safety Research programme 2024

Torr Vision Group (TVG) at the University of Oxford is partnering with BERI to offer Research Programme focused on both the technical and the governance aspects of AI safety. This will be a paid research opportunity and we might also consider remote interns. The deadline to apply is Monday 14th Feb 23:59 UTC. We plan to inform shortlisted candidates (only) via email by Friday February 30th.

We are offering the opportunity to collaborate with TVG group members on projects spanning:

  • Science of Deep Learning, especially LLMs (e.g. https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.12786)
  • Security of Deep Learning Models (Poisoning attacks, Trojans, Jailbreaking)
  • Safe Reinforcement Learning (e.g. Reward Hacking, Goal Misgeneralization, RLHF, RLAIF)
  • Evaluations of LLMs (including LLM-Agents)
  • Interpretability (Mechanistic Interpretability, influence functions, meta-models)
  • AI Governance
TVG will provide primary mentorship and supervision to guide your technical work within the lab's expertise (see https://torrvision.com/publication/). You will work closely with a current lab member and participate in lab activities e.g. AI safety reading groups.

Additionally, Interns will also have the opportunity to engage in a structured research training program, designed to complement their technical work. This includes a series of curated events, seminars, and symposia that connect interns with leading experts across academia, industry, policy circles, and non-profits in the field.

Travel, food and accommodation expenses will be covered.

This form is the main stage of the application process consisting primarily of short essay questions (and should take you maximum 1 hour). In your responses, we recommend focusing on content rather than polish. Applicants who progress to the next stage will be invited for a short interview. The
duration and the start date of the internship are both flexible, based on your and your mentor's availability.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email them at fazlbarez93@gmail.com. However, note that we will only respond to questions that we deem reasonable, and the response time may be slow.

We look forward to receiving your application!
