What site(s) on the coast are you interested in surveying? 
New volunteers must do a field training at each site they want to survey. 
Are you interested in conducting plover detection surveys and/or nest monitoring? 

Both require field training before surveying alone for new volunteers. Detection surveys are performed on wet sand only and are less of a commitment. Nest monitoring is performed in the dry sand, requires the volunteer to be on the ESA-issued Section 10(a) permit, and is more intensive.

Are you a new or returning Plover Patrol volunteer?

If you are a new volunteer, you must attend both a classroom and field training to survey. Classroom trainings are offered both virtually and in-person in April and are 4 hours long. Field trainings are held in small groups in April and May. 

If you are a returning volunteer who has completed past training, attending training is optional but encouraged for refreshing on Snowy Plover knowledge and survey methods.

Plover surveys can be physically demanding - walking several miles on sandy beaches and uneven terrain.
