Know Better Do Better Project
$250 ARTIST GRANT APPLICATION FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”   — Maya Angelou

The Know Better Do Better Project seeks to encourage conversation and awareness of songs that have played a role in sustaining systemic racism, and the writing of new alternative songs. We believe that by facing our music history, creating new songs, and making informed decisions about the songs we choose to sing, we amplify the positive power of music to shape a more just and inclusive world.

We will award four $250 grants to People of Color to write a new song that completes the assignment as described on our web site. Although not currently represented,  we welcome songs that increase the diversity of musical traditions. For example, hip-hop, Latin, African, South American, Indigenous, choral, instrumental, non-English lyrics, etc.

Please note: for musical traditions like hip-hop and instrumental, it is not necessary to follow the assignment as described for more traditional western style songs. See the web site for more details. Also, we are looking for songs that specifically follow the assignment. We will give priority to songs that have not been previously published.

Timeline for these grants:
May 15, 2021: Deadline for submission
May 22, 2021: Grants will be awarded
July 4, 2021: Target date for your song to be completed

If you  are awarded a grant, your new song will be complete when you have delivered:

* an informal video of the song being performed
* a short and informal interview-style video of you describing the "back story" of your new song, similar to the videos on the front page of the project web site
* lyrics (if applicable)
* chords (if applicable)

One half of the grant will be paid at the time of the award, and the second half when your song is delivered. We will consider only one grant proposal per artist or group.

You will retain ownership of your song, however you must allow us to include it on the project web site, and you give permission for anyone to use your song for personal or educational purposes.
