If you are interested in being a Teaching Assistant for any of the introductory Calculus courses (Math 103 to Math 240) during the 2019-2020 academic year, please fill out this application. (If you have previously TAed a course for the Penn Math Department, you do not need to submit this application; instead, send an email to Monica Pallanti <
pallant@math.upenn.edu> expressing your interest for 2019-2020.)
REQUIREMENTS
There are no fixed prerequisites to be a TA beyond a love of teaching and demonstrated knowledge of the course material. You do not need to have taken the course you are TAing, although it helps. You do not need to be a Math major. Our students come from all over the University, and our TAs do too.
PROCESS
We will begin reviewing applications in late April. Candidates who pass the first round will be invited to attend a two day TA training course in August, shortly before the start of classes. ALL FINAL HIRING DECISIONS ARE MADE AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE TRAINING. Details about the training course will be sent out in early summer. Unfortunately, we are unable to hire candidates who cannot attend the training.
In addition, the applicants we hire whose native language is not English are required to pass the University's SPEAK test. Information on the test can be found at
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/elp/ITA.
DUTIES
As a TA, your duties will include teaching weekly recitation students, grading weekly homework assignments, and holding office hours.
You will also be required to help proctor and grade exams, and should plan on being available for several days after the course's final exam. The expected time commitment is 12 hours per week.
