Environmental Alternative Spring Break Application, 2021
Environmental Alternative Spring Break (EASB) provides a unique opportunity for UW students to facilitate hands-on environmental and earth science education in K-12 classrooms throughout Washington. All of the EASB team members will adapt and design a curriculum in partnership with NASA to lead during Spring Break. The topic of each week-long curriculum will be based largely on the needs of the school, but project and activity creation will be up to you. In addition to teaching, EASB also emphasizes the importance of deepening community relationships. Each team seeks out ways to get involved in the community they partner with through high school visits, community events, and visiting local organizations.

NOTE: While we are tentatively planning to visit sites in person, we are prepared to teach curriculum remotely over spring break.

As an EASB member, you will be required to attend a 4 credit weekly-seminar during Winter Quarter (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30-5:50 pm). The trip will take place throughout Spring Break from Sunday, March 21st to Friday, March 26th, 2021.

APPLICATION EXTENDED UNTIL JANUARY 13th

Why are you interested in participating in EASB? How would EASB fit into your personal, academic, or professional goals? (<150 words) *
Please keep in mind that having an environmental education is not required to apply.
EASB is partnered with NASA, and they will be offering support with curriculum building. This will require you to adapt a curriculum based on the needs of each community. In your opinion, how can we most effectively engage the students in the curriculum? (<150 words) *
As a member of EASB, you will be interacting and forming relationships with diverse groups of people. What are some steps you have taken or approaches you have used to form relationships with diverse groups, and how would you integrate the values of diversity and equity into your EASB teaching experience? (<250 words) *
Please describe your experience working with children (elementary and middle school students in particular). *
What are the main three attributes that a leader should have, and how could they be integrated when working with peers? *
Would you be interested in becoming a Team Leader for one of the teams? *
Participating in service learning through tutoring and/or helping in a K-12 classroom is an excellent way to gain experience interacting with the age group you will be working with over Spring Break. From our experience, this is very helpful when it comes time to create lesson plans, and lead a classroom. Would you be able to commit to 2+ hours/week of service learning over Winter quarter? *
If you answered "No" or "Unsure" above, please explain.
Have you had experience teaching online in the past? *
