Acting on the recommendation of the city's Workplace Advisory Committee (WAC), the Minneapolis City Council recently passed an ordinance to prevent wage theft of employees by their employers for work performed in the City. The WAC also recommended extending these protections to freelance workers (independent contractors) as well, and a first draft of a Freelance Worker Protections ordinance was recently posted here:

We know from the experiences of freelancers that you, too, can have difficulty getting paid for your work, and that this type of work arrangement is growing. We need to make sure that everyone gets paid for the work they do, regardless of their exact employment setup.
Because freelancer arrangements can vary so widely, we want to make sure we get it right, so we want to hear from you! If you do freelance work, please fill out this survey, and share it with others in your networks.
NOTE: We will use your responses to inform development of the Freelance Worker Protections ordinance and may share them with City staff. Please be aware that information you submit, including your name and email address (if you provide it), may be requested under the state’s public records law and would need to be disclosed. Only include information that you are comfortable being made public.
