In this lesson, your child will:
  • visit the confessional at church
  • recognize that we can celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation either during a communal penance service or as individuals whenever we want
  • recognize the four parts of the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • participate in a prayer service that introduces them to each part of the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Opening Prayer
Jesus, thank you for gathering us together as members of this parish.  We are happy we will be receiving a sacrament that shows how much God loves us.  Help us to find ways to act more like you.  Help us to love, forgive, and share as you showed us in your life.  Amen.
INTRODUCTION: Wow! Great job on Lesson 5!! We are now on Lesson 6 our final lesson in our Sacrament preparation program for First Reconciliation. We are now just a couple days away from  "Celebrating" your First Reconciliation on January 10th! Way to go!!  Through your "Together in Jesus" lessons you have learned that Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing or restoring togetherness where the unloving actions we call sins have strained and even broken our bonds with God and one another. Our "Together in Jesus" lessons called you to keep the Ten Commandments, to love and forgive each other as Jesus teaches, and to make peace with family members. classmates and neighbors. By keeping the commandments and following Jesus' teachings, all Christians build up a community of trust and love that shows we are the People of God. Now we are ready, in our last lesson to review what we have learned and to prepare to "Celebrate" the Sacrament of Reconciliation!!
TOGETHER IN JESUS: FIRST RECONCILIATION:  First, let's begin by locating your "Together in Jesus: First Reconciliation" Lesson 6 booklet. Also, be sure to have nearby the sticker sheet that came with your booklet. Once you have both, you are ready to go! Today's lesson is "I Prepare for First Reconciliation." But before we do that let us briefly look back at our previous lessons. You have explored the biblical stories of the Ten Commandments, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and his parables of the forgiving father and the unforgiving servant, and Jesus' giving of the Holy Spirit to his frightened friends on the first Easter evening. You have also looked at your own experiences of feeling sorry, making loving and unloving choices, asking, and giving forgiveness, and making peace with others. In this lesson you are going to connect these Bible stories and life experiences with the basic parts of the Sacrament of Reconciliation - sorrow, confession, penance, and absolution.  Turn to pages 1 and 2 in your booklet and read "I Prepare for First Reconciliation" and "The Sacrament of Reconciliation Has Four Parts" and then answer the questions below.

Fantastic job! You can see by the steps and images on page two of your "Together in Jesus" booklet that Reconciliation is a loving and safe way to ask God to forgive us for our sins. After you have confessed you will probably feel like celebrating. And that is great! You should sing, dance, go get ice cream!! Just remember to share God's great love by forgiving others as he has just forgiven you!! Keep practicing the steps for Reconciliation by using your "My First Confession Steps" card which you can take into the confessional with you, and you will do great!
Fantastic! You have now completed the "Learning About the Ten Commandments" booklet. The Ten Commandments help us every day to tell right from wrong and how to make loving choices. By following the commandments, we grow closer to God and to one another. Remember the one who loves like Jesus keeps each of the Ten Commandments and makes them real in his or her life!! The prayer listed below is one you can say each day to help you to remember to keep the commandments.
THE GLORY BE PRAYER: Now we have reached our final prayer, the "Glory Be." The “Glory Be” is far and away the most common Christian prayer after the Our Father and the Hail Mary. This prayer is called a doxology, from the Greek word meaning an expression of glory or praise. Christians usually use it as a way of summing up all their feelings and intentions at the end of some longer prayer. In a sense, the glory of God is the purpose and the content of all our prayers and actions, and so we bring them all together as our act of glorifying God in the Blessed Trinity. We use the "Glory Be" most often when praying the rosary, at the end of each decade, or set of Hail Mary's. When Our Lady prayed the rosary with St Bernadette at Lourdes, this was the only prayer she said aloud, since, of course, she would not be saying Hail Mary's to herself!"
Super great job!  I want you to remember that "Reconciliation is a Celebration." It is a celebration of God's power to make all things new for us!!
