Juneteenth Trivia
The oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States is Juneteenth. Pictured above is the Juneteenth flag. The colors of the flag are red, white and blue, like the American flag, and serve as a reminder that slaves and their descendants were - and are - Americans. A horizontal arch separates the top blue of the flag from the bottom red. The arch represents a new horizon. The large white star in the center represents 1) freedom for all enslaved African Americans and 2) the state of Texas, the last state where enslaved people were notified that they were now free. Around the white star is the outline of a bursting white star. This was inspired by a nova - a new star in the universe - and represents a new beginning for African American people. In white, along the right edge of the flag is the date, June 19, 1865, the day that enslaved Black people in Galvaston, TX finally found out that they were now free Americans. We hope that our Juneteenth trivia provides a glimpse into this important time in our country's history.
