Toni Morrison’s novel called Beloved is based on the true story of an African-American enslaved woman. The novel examines the destructive legacy of slavery as it chronicles the life of a Black woman named Sethe, who, despite being freed, is still held prisoner by her memories.
This book was a bestseller for 25 weeks and won countless awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1993, Toni Morrison became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
“The Book Club” meetings are organized once a month. Each month a different book is selected from the America House library based on the theme of the month. Participants are not required to read or know about the entire book before the session. During the meeting, they get to know more about the author and learn interesting facts about the book itself, and the context in which it was written. They read portions or chapters from the book and have a guided discussion on what they have read.
The purpose of “The Book Club” is to encourage America House visitors aged 14+ with an intermediate level of English to read more, discover new writers and topics, and borrow books from the America House library.
