Documentary Screening - Due Regard
Event Timing: Tuesday, 05 March 2024, 15:00-17:00
Event Address: Lecture Theatre 2, Hicks Building, University of Sheffield, Broomhall, Sheffield S3 7RH

A research project in the Politics and International Relations department at the University of Warwick, funded by the European Research Council, has produced a documentary film about the impact of Prevent referrals on individuals and their families. The 40-minute documentary explores the stories of four families about whom Prevent referrals (concerning vulnerability to radicalisation) were made - by teachers, social workers, and police. Individuals often struggle to obtain information on why they have been referred, and by whom, leading to long battles with local authorities for relevant paperwork. This secrecy, alongside the racist and ableist stigmatisation that characterise most of the featured referrals, leaves deep wounds on those inappropriately referred.

After the screening, there will be a panel discussion - allowing the audience to ask questions of the filmmaker Dr Shahnaz Akhter (University of Warwick), Dr Layla Aitlhadj, (PreventWatch) and Prof. Charlotte Heath-Kelly (University of Warwick)
