Now Hiring: An Executive Editor for Beacon Media Inc.
THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Kansas City Beacon seeks a forward-thinking Executive Editor to lead its community-centered newsroom. The Beacon has financial backing from local and national funders, including the American Journalism Project, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and our membership. We provide Kansans and Missourians with the local news they deserve.

The successful candidate is an experienced newsroom leader with a passion for local journalism and a track record of building and managing teams that produce impactful stories with a strong perspective on equitable, audience-driven journalism. You’ll be at the forefront of a movement to make local news a foundational part of civic life in the Kansas City metro by enabling the kind of journalism that holds power to account while being accountable to the communities we serve.

You will work under the direction of The Beacon’s Publisher, who leads editorial, product and audience strategy for the network, and in close partnership with the Executive Leadership Team.

THE ORGANIZATION:

The Beacon is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit digital news network focused on journalism in the public interest, covering Kansas and Missouri. Beacon stories are revelatory, contextual, data-driven and solutions-driven. We launched The Kansas City Beacon in March 2020 and a sister newsroom, The Wichita Beacon, in Summer 2021. We’ve also recently added statehouse reporters for the network.

-Serve as a visible advocate for The Kansas City Beacon in the community, including speaking at public events.
-Work collaboratively with our staff, as well as a diverse group of freelance reporters and photographers.
-Work with The Beacon’s Publisher to leverage product, audience development and editorial support resources and maximize reporting resources on the ground.

YOU'RE A GOOD FIT IF...

-You have a passion for local accountability journalism and independent media.
-You thrive in a fast-paced startup environment where you are expected to think outside the box and build things from scratch.
-You enjoy collaborating with others and finding new ways to serve the community.

-You are the kind of leader who brings teams together, fosters a healthy work environment and motivates people to go the extra mile.
