You can complete the form without being an official AIAA member for now, but we will ask all involved members for their AIAA Student Membership Number by October 20th. Due to requirements by the AIAA competition committee, we need to enter your Student Number and your Name in the team roster. We will submit the team roster sometime between October 20th - October 31st.

Since it's only the beginning, we understand that you may be indecisive of what exactly you'd like to do, but please do not check any box for the sake of being part of every team. Join teams that you will at least plan to contribute to. This is because we want a clear picture of how many people will actually put effort into a given division/subdivision. Rather than having a team filled with ghost members.

Aerodynamics

Initial Sizing - Research and Computational Analyses: Understand the initial sizing process for the wing and empennage

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - ANSYS Fluent: Design the aircraft and its components for excellent aerodynamic efficiency. Your task involves conducting CFD analyses and using theoretical equations to estimate the drag and lift coefficients of several components and the aircraft as a whole.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - AVL - Stability and Control: Design the aircraft for excellent stability and control. This requires an understanding of control systems and dynamics theory. Experience with SolidWorks is preferred, but isn't mandatory to contribute to this team.

Propulsion

Research: Since we are on a budget (TBD), we must carefully select a few candidates to conduct thrust testing on. Help find test worthy motor, battery, propeller, and electronic speed controller (ESC) candidates through research.

Simulations: This team will probably consist of the same people from the propulsion research team (but not mandatory to be part of both). This team will use MotoCalc to predict flight performance based on the specs of selected propulsion configurations.

Testing: You will conduct both static and wind tunnel thrust testing on all test worthy motor/battery/propeller/ESC configurations to find the configuration(s) that best meet our design requirements (e.g. required thrust while maintaining efficiency).

Mechanism Design

This team will be in charge of coming up with mechanism designs to make a fold-able and self-unlocking wing, locking and dropping mechanisms for the attack stores, and a connection/spinning mechanism design for the radome. This team will select one design for each mechanism, then build and integrate it into the aircraft!

Structures

This team is in charge of the structural design of the aircraft. This will involve solid modeling on SolidWorks. FEA analyses are to be conducted on components. The goal is to make the aircraft light without sacrificing structural soundness. This includes wing, fuselage, empennage, and landing gear structural design!

Flight Testing

Conduct flight tests on our prototypes. Collect sensor data, such as velocity, position, G-force, RPM, altitude, power usage, amperage, and voltage all against time. You will analyze this data and interpret it with regards to how the aircraft's design can be improved.

Develop sensor system to record flight characteristics

Simulate flights using simulink and flight-gear

Learn how to fly R/C planes. Start off by practicing on our simulator. If you can demonstrate good skill on the simulator, then you can fly our practice foam plane. Finally, if you demonstrate good flight skills, you can test fly our prototypes!

Organization

Organize and execute events hosted by AIAA. Work with our Treasurer (Sergio Velazquez) and President (Alaa Barakat) to properly allocate budget funding to certain events.
