In this lesson, you're going to learn some useful language to use in everyday conversations.
Task One: Watch the video and practise saying the words.

Task Three: This is Emma and Mike. Emma owns a café called Emma’s Café. It is in a shopping mall. Mike works in the cafe. Emma and Mike are talking at work. Mike has some questions for Emma.

Task Four: Look at the conversation between Emma and Mike. Practise reading it.
Mike: Hi Emma!
Emma: Hiya Mike. How’s it going?
Mike: Not bad, thanks. Actually, I have something to ask you.
Emma: Sure. Go ahead.
Mike: Well, my sister had a car accident last night.
Emma: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.
Mike: Oh, thanks. She’s OK. Just a few cuts and bruises, but her car’s wrecked.
Emma: Oh dear.
Mike: Yes, so what I want to ask is … Do you mind if I leave a bit early today?
Emma: No, not at all.
Mike: Thanks. I’d like to go round and see her. She’s still a bit shaken up. Can I go at about 4pm?
Emma: Sure. No problem at all. Tell her I hope she feels better soon.
Mike: Thanks. I’ll do that. Oh, and one more thing. I was wondering if I could change my shift next Saturday to be on Sunday instead. I’d like to go and watch the football.
Emma: Let me look at the calendar. Oh, I’m sorry, but I need you to work next Saturday. It’s a long weekend and we’ll be really busy.
Mike: Oh, that’s OK. I can go another time.  
Emma: Thanks.

Task Six: Look at the language we can use in conversations to ask for and give permission. Practise saying the sentences.
A less formal way to ask for permission is: Can I …(verb)…?
-Can I sit here?
-Can I turn on the fan?
-Can I go to the bathroom?

We can answer these with: Yes, sure or I’m sorry, but …(reason)…


A formal way to ask for permission is: Do you mind if I …(verb)…?
-Do you mind if I sit here?
-Do you mind if I turn on the fan?
-Do you mind if I go to the bathroom?

We can answer these with: No, not at all or I’m sorry, but …(reason)…


A more formal way to ask for permission is: I was wondering if I could …(verb)….
-I was wondering if I could sit here.
-I was wondering if I could turn on the fan.
-I was wondering if I could go to the bathroom.

We can answer these with: Yes, of course or I’m sorry, but …(reason)…

Task Seven: Peach and Chai are friends at school. They are working on a science project at Chai's house. Choose the right words to complete their conversation.
Peach: My phone battery’s on 8%. _____ I charge my phone?
Chai: Yes, _____. There’s a socket next to the door, over there.
Peach: Thanks. And do you _____ if I use your tablet while my phone's charging?
Chai: Oh, I'm _____, but I'm using it at the moment.
Task Eight: Jon is in a cafe. He wants to use the wifi. He asks the waiter.  Choose the right words to complete their conversation.
Jon: Excuse me. I was _____ if I could use the wifi?
Waiter: Yes, of _____ . It's called Big Cafe.
Jon: Thanks. I've found it. Do you mind _____ me the password?
Waiter: _____ . It's 12345678.
