Gather Ethics of Engagement Survey
In order for engaged journalism to continue to support communities, we need to grapple with the potential tensions between traditional journalistic values (think: enhancing public knowledge) and emerging ones, such as building lasting, trustful relationships with the communities we serve.

Gather will host a series of conversations about the ethics of engagement in the coming months. Our plan is to host four (4) longer Lightning Chats in February, March and April, followed by a deep report-back in early summer. As we're developing these Lightning Chats, we'd love to hear from you.

Working with SPJ's ethics committee chair, Lynn Walsh, we've put together this survey of ethics questions for your review and consideration. Based on your collective feedback, we'll co-design the Lightning Chat series and dig deeper into what resonated with you.

Please provide your insights by Wednesday, February 12. Thank you!

Approaching the Questions
You will be answering questions related to four main areas: Participate, Collaborate/Co-Design, Advocacy and Use of Content.

When responding, we ask that you answer these questions as if it were the ideal, most ethical solution that you think should happen. This may mean that it doesn't match what is currently happening in newsrooms but instead is what should be happening.

Also, the questions are purposely worded to elicit yes/no or agree/disagree responses. This way we can see where our community of practice generally agrees, and where there is more disagreement or nuance, and thus would make more fruitful conversations in the next months. Please select the number closest to where your opinion falls on the scale.

We estimate the survey takes 10 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for your time and feedback.
