Participants will be together in small groups of 4 to 5 lead by trained adult staff including licensed current and retired science teachers, professionals in Natural Science, and UCC college students to guide student teams through our exploration and citizen outdoor science adventures. Lessons are aligned with Oregon Next Generation science standards and field studies will include a variety of activities such as:
Animal Tracking
Mollusks and Macroinvertebrates
Stream and Riparian Habitat
Indigenous Culture and Language
Bumble bees, pollinators
Insect Identification
Journaling
We will be hiking, examining trees and waters in riparian area of the creek to discover what lives in them; searching for native bumble bees and butterflies; amphibians; using microscopes and other science tools; making castings of tracks, and much more.
Drop-off and pick-up location for Tuesday and Wednesday will be Evergreen Park in Myrtle Creek. Caravan assembly will be at the Myrtle Creek Library for Thursday's field day adventure to the USFS Cow Creek Trail Head. Students who choose to attend the third day will be accompanied on the Cow Creek Trail with wildlife biologists, Cow Creek Tribal staff, nature enthusiasts and volunteers.
Lunch is provided during this science camp, and each participant will go home with lots of fun science stuff to further their interests. This is a free activity, but due to the costs of food and supplies for the camp we are asking for a donation of $20.00 per child if possible, payable on the Umpqua Watersheds website under the event listing. Thank you for your support and encouraging your child in nature exploration!
