About Pandemic Professors
Our founding team is made up of recent University of California, Berkeley grads working to connect students with tutors during the COVID-19 pandemic. We offer a 100% free service and are purely volunteer-run. Our volunteers consist of tutors, interns, pro-bono consultants and other staff who believe this is a time to come together and help each other make the world a better place.
Our Values
* Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
* Dedication & Drive
* Learning & Growth
* Fun & Sense of Humor
* Care & Trust
Snapshot of our ideal tutor
* Aged 18 and older. We apologize however we cannot accept tutors who are not aged 18+ at this time. We are working on it!
* Will be located in the United States while tutoring. For legal reasons we prohibit one-on-one contact between overseas tutors and students.
* Current undergraduate/graduate student or recently graduated (we don't have a hard requirement, but many of our tutors graduated in the last ~5-10 years)
* Interested in virtually tutoring any or all of the following:
        - Standard K-12 subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies English, Languages)
        - Coding (any language or level)
        - College apps and/or standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, TOEFL)
* Willing to dedicate at least 2 hours per week for K-12 tutoring or at least 1 hour per week for coding or college apps/test prep & will offer sessions for at least one month
* Compassionate, prosocial individual who believes in high-quality education for all and who will provide meaningful mentorship to students
* Conscientious person with attention to detail, who wants to use their organizational skills to create a positive learning environment for a child while also supporting overworked parents/guardians
* Adaptable and open-minded enough to be able to serve a diverse population of students and families with a range of needs and goals in this new virtual learning environment -- it is critical that you compassionately and actively problem-solve with families (with Pandemic Professors staff support), often on the fly
* Someone with a growth mindset who is eager to grow as a tutor. We don't require you to have prior experience, you just have to want to learn!
* Curious, creative and willing to experiment with different ways of providing high-quality, virtual tutoring
Snapshot of our typical student
* They come from a low-income family impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
* They range from Kindergarten through 12th grade
* Although the majority of our families speak English, we also have a number of families whose primary language is Spanish.
* Their parent/guardian cares deeply about supporting their educational goals
Statistics
* About 3/4 of our students are in kindergarten through middle school, but we still get a sizable number of high school students.
* Math is our most frequently requested tutoring subject
* About 50% of our families report an annual income of $0-40K and most of our families have 3-5 individuals in their household.
* About 40% of the families we work with have a parent who is considered "essential" personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The process of pairing tutors with students
"Sounds great! How do I sign up?"

After you submit your Tutor Application (the one you are reading right now!) it typically takes 2-4 weeks to receive your student match. This is only an average, timing can vary and is dependent on demand for tutors. Here is an overview of what happens during that time.

Step 1 - SUBMIT TUTOR APPLICATION (you are here!)

Step 2 - CLEARANCE
* After you submit your Tutor Application, we review it. Occasionally, we follow up with a candidate if we have questions about their application. After reviewing the Tutor Application, we send you instructions on how to complete our clearance process.

* Our clearance process takes about 3 hours on your end. After you complete your part, tutors usually get cleared within 2 weeks, however this timeline is sometimes delayed by the reference check which requires us to wait on your references to get back to us.

Step 3 - TUTOR PREFERENCES
* Once you are cleared, we send you a form asking you about your preferences, such as subjects you’d like to teach and the grade level you wish to work with. We’ll also ask about scheduling availability so that we can pair you with a student with similar availability. We do our best to accommodate tutor preferences, however it largely depends on what our students need.

Step 4 - PAIRING
* After receiving your tutor preferences, it can take anywhere from 1 day to up to 3 weeks to pair you to a student. Again, this is entirely dependent on student needs.
