ICSD Code of Conduct Feedback Form
Dear ICSD Community,

In 2019, the Ithaca City School District Board of Education convened an Advisory Council to update the Code of Conduct, an important document that guides community standards for all schools in the ICSD. The Advisory Council, composed of teachers, administrators, staff, community members, parents, and students, was hard at work developing a document that is in line with the ICSD’s vision when COVID-19 caused our work to change directions.

During Summer 2020, a small group of the Advisory Council met for an intensive week to write an Addendum to the existing Code of Conduct to reflect the reality of online learning, including important provisions about mask-wearing, use of cameras, recording of virtual lessons, and the rights of students and teachers who were being asked to undertake an enormous shift in teaching and learning.

Following this work, the Advisory Council re-formed in Fall 2020 and has, for the past two years, continued to meet to craft an updated Code of Conduct that takes into consideration best practices in teaching and learning and research-based understandings of model Codes of Conduct throughout the nation. We have held monthly meetings, hosted a three-day summer workshop, and engaged in countless personal and individual conversations with all stakeholders. We have recruited participation widely, from each of the five bargaining units, PTA and community organizations, and various student groups.

This version of the ICSD Code of Conduct is a draft (https://www.ithacacityschools.org/tfiles/folder3256/ICSD%20Code%20of%20Conduct%202022%20Watermark%20Draft.pdf). It is our hope that this newest draft is a move toward a truly inclusive, justice-focused, respectful, and loving understanding of school communities. This will not be a perfect document; there will be those who feel that it has gone too far and those that feel it has not gone far enough. Over the next 60 days, we will find ways to hear from even more community members through regular feedback sessions and an online form, as outlined here: https://www.ithacacityschools.org/conduct. Please engage with the Code of Conduct with an eye toward that feedback and with the goal of supporting an affirming, enriching education for all ICSD students.
