Science Saturdays is a fun hands-on learning opportunity geared toward students ages *12 and older that is sponsored by Learning Options, Inc. (age requirements may vary per session)
This program will be held in both Harrison and Marion Counties.
*March-The Science of Exercise with Melissa Sinisi (all ages)
March 13– 9:30am to 11:30am/East Marion Park, Fairmont

During this class, we will learn the physical and the physiological effects of exercise. We will calculate BMI, learn how your heart rate affects your performance, look at how your diet affects your body, take a look at skeletal muscle groups, and investigate the correlation basics of various types of workouts. We will explore HIIT, Tabata, Strength Training, Cardio Training and many others.., If you re an athlete or if you are a beginner, the workouts will be adaptable to you.

*April-Garden Science Basics: Grow Your Own! With Master Gardener Liz DeRoos (ages 10 and up)

This project will invite area students ages 10 and up to learn from a Master Gardener the science behind growing your own food. Using existing raised beds at a local community garden, students will plan and establish individual gardens of their own design. During two 2-hour workshops in April, students will be introduced to soil composition and amendments, plant and seed selection and requirements, and seasonal considerations. Additionally, ongoing garden care, maintenance, plant growth, pollination and harvest will be topics of instruction for demonstration and practice. Follow-up sessions will provide students opportunities to evaluate results.

On two Saturdays at Prickett’s Fort State Park, Birding Expert Joey Herron will introduce students to his ongoing banding project. Students will be able to examine birds up close and learn about identifying birds through field marks, habitat, migration, and more. These workshops are RemakeLearningDays.org events.

*June- Getting to Know our Woods with Chris Evans from WV Division of Forestry
June 12- 9:30am- 11:30am/ Morris Park, Fairmont

Forestry Science: In the June 12 session, learn about what foresters do and take a walk in the woods to learn more about native trees and what keeps them healthy. Participants will dig deeper into the science of silviculture and practices to promote healthy forests in the June 19 session.
