K-12 Shim Sham Dance Day Camp August 2nd, K-12 Charleston Swing Solo Jazz August 5th and 10th, and 6th grade-12th grade Lindy Hop (partner dancing) Day Camp August 17th, all at Monroe Middle School with Nika Jin/Shane Allen (Dance Instructor), Angela Finneran (4J Staff) Summer Enrichment Program 2021 Registration Form
Students will be provided materials for the course as needed. Please wear comfortable, non-marking shoes (tennis shoes) with a flat bottom for all that will be secured to feet (please no sandals) for all classes. Water bottle recommended but not required (access to water in gym).
K-12 Shim Sham: August 2nd
Description: Come learn the Shim Sham! This Lindy Hop line dance has its roots in tap but evolved to be a favorite in the Savory Ballroom in the 1930s Swing Era. Though the influence of Frankie Manning ,the Shim Sham is now a global phenomenon and can be enjoyed by young, old, and everyone in between.
The class will include follow-the-leader-style learning of classic jazz steps, as well as jam circles and tons of fun music. No experience necessary, just bring your good vibes!
Class capacity- 40 students, all ages

Come learn the Charleston Dance!
Description: The Charleston is the original dance craze that swept the nation from coast to coast. Originating in 1920s South Carolina, echos of its rhythm and shape can be seen in hip hop, breakin', and other contemporary Black American traditions. We will explore the many variations of the Charleston that have developed through the decades and encourage students to find their own style to add to the conversation!
The class will include follow-the-leader-style learning of classic jazz steps, as well as jam circles and tons of fun music. No experience necessary, just bring your good vibes!
This course will be the same on both August 5th and 10th, but feel free to sign up for both!

6th-12th Lindy Hop: August 17th
Description: Lindy Hop is "America's Folk Dance", a social dance created by Black American dancers in Harlem's famous Savoy Ballroom in the 1930s. Famously done at high tempos to scorching big bands, Lindy Hop was an important avenue of self-expression for young people in difficult times. Come "swing-out" with us and join a global community of people who love to get down to swing music.
The class will include follow-the-leader-style learning of classic jazz steps, as well as jam circles and tons of fun music. No experience necessary, just bring your good vibes!
Class capacity- 30 students, 6th grade- 12th grade only
**Solo dance will be held in accordance with 4J School District COVID safety protocols specific, Including the practice of social distancing and required PPE.**
