Sailors around the world know about the Don Q Snipe Regatta that has been hosted by the Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami for more than 57 years. But this is not that! In fact, this is Knot the Don Q Rum Championship Regatta!
OK, what do I do? Plan to join us Saturday, August 19 starting at 11am for a complimentary lunch (at the BBQ Pavilion or in the Clubhouse). Then we'll go sail in the two afternoon club fleet races. OK, so what's different? Well, the race course for us will include a Special Race Committee Pontoon boat that will be positioned about a third of the way down from the windward mark. On this one race committee boat there will be a plank holding 16oz cups, with each cup having been assigned to each of the Snipe boats competing. In this regatta your objective is to sail as well as you can and finish the race course, but in addition you'll want to fill your assigned cup as high as possible. You will be scored based on how you finished the race PLUS how well you filled your cup. How do you fill your cup? Each boat will be issued one official KTDQRCR water gun! You may only use this water gun to squirt water into your assigned cup, and you may only do this while sailing downwind from the windward mark, maintaining at least 2 boat lengths between you and the Special Race Committee Pontoon boat. (No bumper boats please!)
OK, I sailed past but didn't get much of any water in my cup! What can I do? You may optionally round the Special Race Committee Pontoon boat, sail back around the windward mark, try again to fill up your cup, and then continue on the race course. But you can only squirt into your cup while sailing downwind.
OK, but can I use my official KTDQRCR water gun to squirt other boats? Of course you can! Beware that the race management officials on the Special Race Committee Pontoon boat may squirt back!
