Child and adolescent African-centered therapy is an therapeutic
approach that emphasizes the importance of African culture and heritage in the
healing process for children and adolescents. African-centered therapy draws
from the cultural values, experiences, and traditions of African people. It
recognizes the unique challenges and strengths of individuals from African
backgrounds and seeks to empower them by promoting cultural awareness, self-determination,and community involvement. This approach emphasizes the importance of spirituality, communal relationships, and their interconnectedness of all things. African-centered therapy can be beneficial for individuals struggling
with issues related to identity trauma and oppression by incorporating cultural
practice and beliefs it can provide a more holistic and empowering approach to healing.
One example of an African-centered intervention for youth is
trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Ms. Montgomery is a graduate of
