INTRODUCTION: Preparing to receive First Communion is a big deal. And no matter how many times we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, it should always be a big deal. Jesus comes to us in a unique way in the Eucharist. When He comes, we receive Him into our body and our soul. This is a very beautiful, personal, and intimate sacrament and something we should never take for granted! It is such a holy, joyful occasion. Our souls become the bride of Christ. That is why girls wear white dresses and boys wear suits. Pope Francis, calls the Eucharist the "Sacrament of Love" as "...it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself. From this Sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic journey of faith, of communion, and of witness." Today's lesson is the third of six lessons in the "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" sacrament preparation program that will help you to prepare to receive this "Sacrament of Love." So let's get started!
OPENING PRAYER: Welcome to your "Together in Jesus: First Eucharist" Lesson 4. As outlined in the first lesson we will begin each lesson with a prayer. So take a moment to gather at your sacred place or table and to recite, together, the prayer pictured below.
JESUS' SPECIAL SUPPER: Jesus and the Jewish people would celebrate Sabbath days and holy days with their remembering and sharing of food - bread and wine. Just as we do, the Jewish people had special holy days. Our greatest feast day is Easter. The feast of Passover is one of the Jewish people's greatest feast days because it celebrated how God set them free from being slaves in Egypt and made them a people. Jewish people gather together on that feast day to remember how God helped them, and to share bread and wine and other special foods. Take a look at the cover page of your "Together in Jesus" lesson 4 and read the paragraph about "Jesus' Special Supper." When you are done, think about what is missing at this supper. If you said the bread and wine, you are correct. Help to complete this supper preparation by finding the cup and bread sticker and placing it on the table in the correct spot. Then answer the questions below.
Check off below all the things that the people are doing in the picture to help Jesus prepare for the special meal. *

JESUS EATS A SPECIAL SUPPER WITH HIS FRIENDS: In every Eucharistic Prayer at Mass, the celebrating priest leads the community in praying the story of Jesus' Last Supper. At this supper Jesus made bread and wine special signs of his wholehearted love for us. The next day he gave his life for us on the Cross. Let's take a moment to turn to pages 2 and 3 in your "Together in Jesus" lesson. Take a look at the picture and locate Jesus. Then, can you name some of Jesus' followers who are gathered at the table with him? If you said Peter, James, Judas, Matthew , Andrew, Phillip and John, you are correct! Now work with your family to assign parts and to read through the story of the Last Supper. If no one is available, you can be creative and read all the parts yourself! When you are done please answer the questions below.
What did Jesus like to do with his friends? *

Summary: So what is special about this meal? If you said it is because Jesus tells his friends that the bread and wine are his Body and Blood and that they are to share this meal in memory of him, you are correct. This is what we do in every Eucharist that we celebrate at Mass. We gather to remember Jesus. The priest retells the story of Jesus' Last Supper and consecrates (blesses) our gifts of bread and wine, so that they become the Body and Blood of Christ. In this way, Jesus is really present with us.
OUR COMMUNITY REMEMBERS JESUS AS HE ASKED US TO DO: Just as Jesus' followers prepared a meal, we also prepare a meal at every Mass. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we bring bread and wine to the altar and hand it to the priest so that he can consecrate both of them.  At Mass, we gather to listen to the story of Jesus at his Last Supper. We share in this special meal by listening and by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus' body is a sign of life for us. When we share his Body, we are sharing in Jesus' life. Jesus poured out his Blood for us when he died. Each week at Mass, we share his Body and Blood in memory of Him. Turn to page 4 and read what is said under each picture. You will see how what we do today at Mass is similar to what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Be sure to find your host and chalice stickers and place them in the appropriate spot. When you are done, go to the next section.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: I want you to take some time to look at your "Going to Mass" window chart and your "My Mass Book," pages 6-10, to see the prayers and responses that we say during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. As you attend Mass, take some time to reflect and think about Jesus and the Last Supper. We are remembering the Last Supper when we celebrate the Eucharist. Once you have received your First Eucharist, you will begin to participate more fully in the life of the Church, which gathers to remember Jesus's Last Supper. Through this sacrament we share the Body and Blood of Christ and become Christ's Body in the world today - the Church.
What is the first step taken in the Liturgy of the Eucharist? Use your "My Mass Book" for the answers. *

SUMMARY: Great job! Now it is time to close out your lesson. You will need a loaf of bread or some rolls to do this. Gather with your Mom and/or Dad and read through the "Sharing Bread" prayer pictured below. I have also attached a link to the lesson that will allow you to print it out. When you gather to do this, think about Jesus gathered with his followers at the Last Supper and the incredible sacrifice he would make for us!
Super excellent job! You have just completed your fourth "First Eucharist" lesson! Way to go! Now go back to your sticker sheet and find the "Lesson 4" sticker and place it in the box on page 4 at the bottom of the page (see picture above). And you are done! Have a blessed week!
