I was the kid who always asked the teacher, "WHY?" so I'll tell you why you should listen to me.
Why am I doing this in the first place?
I am in a club that awards scholarship money to Titans who want to become health care professionals. I was not on the smaller committee who chose the winners, but I looked over the applications after it was over, and it was very obvious that some kids do not know how to complete scholarship applications. They are bright, they are probably deserving, but they didn't make that case on paper. That's when I decided I should teach them how. Let's level the playing field a bit!
How do I know what you need to know? I lived it.
- I was a first-generation college student who navigated the college world alone.
- I didn't go to college until I was 33 years old.
- I was a terrible high school student. (not boasting, but it's a fact)
- When I finally got there, I stayed in college for EIGHT YEARS and never paid my own tuition.
- I have three children and all three of them are college grads.
- I am a retired English teacher with a master's degree and 60+ hours in education and writing.
- I have over 20 years in administration where I read resumes &n cover letters and selected job candidates.
- I am fun, and I care deeply about kids.
How much does it cost?
- If you get just one $1000 scholarship, that's 131 hours you won't have to work at McDonalds to pay tuition.
- This letter we compose at the workshop will serve as the outline for job applications in the future.
We are ALL IN THIS TOGETHER and I want to make sure more of us get where we want to go!
