(Note that only two of these will be scheduled with a JVH teacher for 2019-20 to make room for Social Studies 11/12. All other Sciences, including Earth Sciences 11, are available through an online school.)

For next year's grades 9-12 students... Please select each Exploration that you would like to take in 2019-20. (Note that this is not the actual course sign-up and not all of these will likely run, depending on your responses. We will run another survey once we decide which Explorations to schedule against each other in Blocks A & B.)

Art - Ms. Oswald - Terms 1 & 4 in one Exploration block - This class will be focused on developing a professional art portfolio and a personal style. Students taking this class are mature artists with an interest in pursuing the Fine Arts after grade 12. A trip to Emily Carr's Portfolio Day will be part of this (after term 1) as well as writing applications for shows in Term 4.

Art - Ms. Oswald - Terms 2 & 3 in one Exploration block - This class will be focused on exploring Visual Art. Drawing, Painting and Sculpture will be explored through guided lessons and projects. Students taking this class are interested in playing in the visual arts but not necessarily as a career.

Choir - Ms. Oswald - Full year, outside the timetable - Raise your voice and make it heard!! This course will be available outside the timetable in the evening for 2 hours one day a week for the full year. Students will be learning to harmonise and build confidence as soloists in an acappella choral ensemble. There will be opportunities for performance.

Dance - Ms. Patience - Half year in one Exploration block - This course will mainly focus on modern jazz. Jazz dance combines techniques of ballet and modern dance. This class will provide basic technique and practice of warm- up, dance combinations, stretching, and building strength progressing to complete dance routines.

Drama - Ms. Patience - Full year in one Exploration block - The overall goal of drama is to foster a positive self-concept in students by encouraging them to explore life by the assumption of roles and by the acquisition of dramatic skills. This goal will be achieved through the following activities: creating scenes both in improvisational and written form, script acting, movement, character development, stage craft, studying comedic and tragic scenes, light design, sound and music for dramatic effect, choreography and directing.

Electronics - Mr. Einer - Half year in one Exploration block - This course will begin with students developing the skills to assemble electrical circuits. Students will learn soldering, how to interpret wiring diagrams, series vs parallel circuits, the function of components (resistors, capacitors), and “breadboarding” to construct and analyze circuits prior to assembly. With these skills, students will be able to explore areas of their interest. For example, in past, students have created remote control vehicles, worked with an Arduino to control simple circuit functions, and focused on constructing more complicated circuits.

Extended Physical Education - Mr. Zuk - Terms 1 & 4 in one Exploration block - Students in this course will have an opportunity to explore many different sports and activities. Though we will do some of the more conventional ones, we will spend a substantial amount of time taking part in activities not commonly associated with regular PE. This will include activities like golf, tennis, spike ball, track and field, lawn sports/games, Speed Gate etc...

Extended Physical Education - Mr. Zuk - Terms 2 & 3 in one Exploration block - Students in this course will have an opportunity to explore many different sports and activities. Though we will do some of the more conventional ones, we will spend a substantial amount of time taking part in activities not commonly associated with regular PE. This will include activities like squash, wall climbing, curling, archery, snowball, snowshoeing etc...

Film Studies - Ms. Holland - Half year in one Exploration block - Film Studies will look at feature and independent films, over the HISTORY of film, that present, this year, on themes of IDENTITY(cultural, gender, religious, aboriginal, etc) on how we build our identities, and how society shapes them. This will involve Foreign Films through “mainstream” and Independent! Students will view and respond to film themes in discussion and in short written responses! Techniques like cinematography, lighting, point of view, musical scores, design and intent will flow through the course as we travel around the world.

Foods - Ms. Terlingen - Half year in one Exploration block - Do you dream of being creative in the kitchen? Do you love to eat food? Do you enjoy preparing food for others? Come and join Foods class where we will be exploring the world of food...choosing and making recipes, food preparation, planning and shopping of ingredients and serving food for school lunch program and community events. Feeding the principal is also a major highlight.

Leadership Education - Mr. Zuk - Half year in one Exploration block - This course will give students an opportunity to learn effective leadership skills and put them into action. Using the Design Thinking Method, students will create projects that will benefit our school/community/world. One larger focus of this course will be to begin planning an international trip for the 2020/21 school year on which participants will get to experience international volunteerism.

Outdoor Adventures Fall & Spring - Ms. Broadfoot - Terms 1 & 4 in one Exploration block - This course will focus on preparing students for multi-day canoeing and backpacking trips. Students will learn how to do pre-trip planning, they will develop their outdoor skills in the field as well as learn backcountry etiquette and safety. The course will include a multi-day canoe trip, a multi-day backpacking trip as well as some smaller day trips. Students will obtain their Canoe Tripping Paddler and Lakewater Level 1 canoeing certificates as a part of this course. This course will also include a substantial amount of fundraising and out of class time commitments.

Outdoor Adventures Winter - Ms. Broadfoot - Terms 2 & 3 in both Exploration blocks - This course will focus on developing students' skiing and snowboarding skills as well as their avalanche and backcountry safety skills. We will spend the majority of our time at Whitewater Ski Resort, which includes a daily lesson. Students will also complete the 3 day Avalanche Safety Training 1 certificate course, which will give them an introduction to backcountry skiing/snowboarding. Note that students are not required to own all of their own gear - rentals are available. This course will also include a substantial amount of fundraising and out of class time commitments.

Outdoor Science - Mr. Einer - Half year in one Exploration block - Come prepared to go outside each class and learn about meteorology (weather), geology (rocks), botany (plants), fish and wildlife (and their management), astronomy (stars), and ecology (interaction of all!). A chance to explore Kaslo and area to understand and appreciate what is happening in our natural and physical worlds.

Stage Band 'Primo Select' - Full year, outside the timetable - Ms. Oswald - By invitation or audition only. This Exploration involves being part of a music group that is performance oriented. It will be offered outside of the timetable in the evening for two hours one day a week for the full year. Grades 10-12 students will gain 4 credits. Students will be learning how to read, play, and perform music together. Instrumentation includes vocals, drum kit, guitar, bass, keyboard, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, baritone....

Tech Ed (Fabrication Lab) - Teacher to be determined - Half year in one Exploration block - Do you like technology? Are you curious about how they are used to build things? Would you like to work with a 3D printer or laser cutter? The school has recently acquired such tools and is now able to offer an Exploration in which students can work with them. The program will be investigate how digital design links to computer controlled devices to manufacture things. This is already standard practice in industry and will provide a good background for anyone considering a future that involve making things or anyone who simply like digital devices and control.

Tech Ed (Shop) - Mr. Anderson - Half year in one Exploration block - If you like noise and smoke and fire and sawdust and grease then trades is the exploration for you. Seriously, this class will suit people who like the creativity and satisfaction of building things with their own hands and with our new 'Fabrication Lab' technology. The course will have two main components. The first, which will take about one third of the class time is a "Common Core" composed of skills applicable to all trades which everyone will do. The second, which will fill the remaining two thirds of the time, is self-directed project work. Whatever your preference - woodwork, metalwork or mechanics - you will be able to design, develop and build projects of your own choice. Instruction is individualized to help you acquire the skills you need for the project you want. Creating something unique is magic, you make it appear out of nowhere. Join this class and make some magic happen.
