Volunteer Roles
Catechist:
Assigned to a class for the year, usually with another catechist or aide. Catechists plan and teach lessons for the class using the catechist guide and syllabus provided. Many resources are provided in the faith formation office to help plan, and you are encouraged to discuss lessons with the coordinator and other catechists if more help is needed. Most catechists spend about 30 minutes per week to read through the chapter and lesson plan. Catechists are not required to have any previous teaching experience, but should have a love for children and Christ! Catechists must be a practicing Catholic, and at least 18 years old.
Aide:
Catechist aides assist catechists in planning and teaching in classroom, depending on their comfort level. Aides are never asked to teach a class by themselves. Aides must be at least 12 years old.
Session Coordinator:
Not assigned to a class, but may be asked to substitute if needed (not often). Supports the coordinator with anything needed in the office, makes sure all catechists have arrived, and should be comfortable answering questions and helping with any issues in the classroom in the event that the coordinator is not in the office (with a class or handling another issue - the coordinator will always be present during the session).
Substitute:
Assigned to a session, but not a particular class. Should be comfortable stepping in to teach a class with a lesson plan provided. If substituting for 2nd grade and lower, will always be given an aide to help in the classroom. Should check in to see if needed before classes begin.
