Brass Butterflies Summer Circus Showcase 2024 DIY Performer Application
Event Timing: Saturday, July 13, 6:30pm

Event Location: Brass Butterflies Studio, 60 Bathurst Drive Units 14-15, Waterloo, ON N2V 2A9

Description: A studio showcase featuring circus style performances by students and staff of Brass Butterflies.  This is a family friendly/all ages show.

Important Information and Instructions (Please read carefully before submitting your application):

Please note that these events are fun, amature showcases put on by our studio community, for our studio community, family, and friends.  They are not professional shows, and DIY performances are not compensated.  Performing in the show is voluntary.

This application is for current and recent students and staff of Brass Butterflies.  If you are a guest from another studio who is interested in performing, please contact us through events@brassbutterflies.com to express your interest.

Please fill out the form below to the best of your ability to indicate your interest in performing a "DIY" act in the Summer Circus Showcase. If you don't have complete information yet, that's okay, submit what you have now, (just leave questions blank or write TBD if a response is required by the form) but the more you can tell us about your act now, the easier it will be for us to accept your application and offer you a spot in the show.  You will be contacted with more details once we have received all applications and allocated spots in the show.  Where it makes sense, we might be able to let you know you've been accepted before the application deadline so you don't lose any time working on your routine.

Though we would like to invite everyone who applies to perform, in order to keep the show to a reasonable length, performance slots are limited. Priority will be given to current students and staff of Brass Butterflies, and considered in the order they are received.

If your application is accepted, there is no fee associated with performing in the show, however you will be responsible for paying for any Open Practices you attend or additional lessons you book to help you prepare.  We will be posting a few free Performer Only practices closer to the show date but you should not count on these to be enough to prepare your performance.  You will also be expected to attend a tech/dress rehearsal sometime in the two weeks leading up to the show (date and time TBA).

We will be accepting applications until  11:59pm May 20, 2024, though the earlier you get your application in, the better your chances of being accepted.

If performing as a duet or group, please list the full names of the other performers here.
Music - Song and Artist *
If you already know what song you would like to use for your performance, please share this with us (song name and artist) so we can can take this into consideration and let you know if someone else has already requested to use that song.  (If you're not sure yet, just type TBD)

Music should be the "Clean" version or radio edit and should be appropriate for all ages.  Mildly suggestive lyrics or subtly mature themes are probably fine, but lyrics suggesting hate in any form (e.g. racism, sexism, trans or homophobia, etc.) will not be permitted.  Brass Butterflies reserves the right to refuse a specific song choice if we feel it is inappropriate for any reason.

Your song should be available on Apple Music or provided in MP3 format (if it is edited or a special version - YouTube music is only acceptable if you download it and submit it in MP3 format).  If your song is edited, please email the MP3 to events@brassbutterflies.com.
Apple Music Link:
Please provide the link to your song from Apple Music (if not providing an MP3).  Use this link to search the Apple Music catalogue without requiring a login or paid account: https://music.apple.com/us/browse.  Click the three dots to the right of the song, then click Share -> Copy Link, and paste this link in the form, here.

Cue to start music (i.e. you'll be starting off stage, or when you strike a specific pose).  Also please note here if we need to fade out at the end or any other special instructions.
Performer Bio and MC Notes
Please provide a short paragraph, written in the third person, about yourself/group and anything you'd like to share about your performance. e.g. Jane Aerialist has be practicing aerial silks for 3 years.  She started aerials because ...  What she loves about circus is ...  Jane was inspired by this music because ... (or however you'd like to tell your story).

Brass Butterflies reserves the right to edit your bio paragraph to fit theme, time, or space (for written/published bios) restrictions.
Rigging and Setup

Aerial performances will be restricted to a maximum of 2 apparatuses using points 7 and 8 (see diagram below).  The audience will be seated under the remaining points, facing the back studio.  Audience capacity is approximately 90.  Please keep in mind that space for floorwork is limited because of the crash mats, and because the audience is flat, not tiered like a theatre, it is difficult for the back rows to see floor work in front of the points.

** SAFETY NOTE:  Points will always have swivels and you will be expected to perform with crash mats under your point, so please take this into consideration when planning floor work and low spinning in your choreography.  Experienced instructors and performers with their own insurance might be granted exceptions to the mat rule at management's discretion, but no other exceptions will be made.
Which specific apparatus would you prefer?
Examples: dark purple silks, 36" tabless hoop with 6 foot spanset - fully taped, 38" double-tab hoop with rope leads.
The default point for solos will be point 8.  If you are using more than one apparatus/point, please indicate which point each apparatus should be on.
Lighting, Costumes, Props and Special Effects
Lighting: The studio will be providing LED stage lighting.  There will be limited options for different colour washes and level of lighting.  We will not have spotlights or special effect lighting (e.g. strobes).  Please feel free to request lighting considerations, such as "warm and bright", or "red and moody", or if you would like a blackout at the start or end of your performance.  We will do our best to accommodate requests.  Also keep in mind that for videography and photography, if you chose a particularly dark lighting scheme, you won't get good video or photos of your routine.

Costumes:  The same rules apply to your costume as in your classes - no shoes, no jewellery, zippers, or accessories with edges that could catch the fabric (this can include some sequins) or scratch the bar apparatuses. We will consider exceptions for costumes that do not cover the armpits, but we recommend you consider whether this could cause you injury (scrapes, burns) during your performance, and you will be expected to train in apparel that meets our normal requirements, only training in your costume for official dress rehearsals and the actual performance.N

Props and Special Effects:
Any other special effects or props are to be provided by the performer and should be easily set up and removed before and after your performance.  Please describe them below and how they should be set up.

ABSOLUTELY NO LOOSE GLITTER, CONFETTI, SMOKE, FOG OR FIRE EFFECTS.
Lighting Preferences
Describe your general light preferences and any special requests. e.g. "warm and bright" or "red and moody"
Props
Do you have any props that need to be set up or placed for you before and/or removed at the end of your act?
Anything else you would like to add?
If you have any questions about the show or the application process, please email events@brassbutterflies.com
A copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided.
