GABRIELLA MONTEZ - Mezzo Soprano, Female:
The new student who’s struggling to find her place at East High; she doesn’t fully identify with any of the cliques, so she takes her time to explore her options along the way.  A booksmart observer, Gabriella can be shy and vulnerable at times, but starts to grow her confidence as she discovers her talent & passion for singing with Troy.

TROY BOLTON - Tenor, Male:
The most popular student at East High & the star of the basketball team.  Even though he’s popular, he doesn’t let it go to his head, and is friendly to all those around him.  He’s an athlete and a natural leader who discovers that his dreams may be different from what everyone expects from him.  He discovers his love for singing, but is afraid to admit it to his basketball buddies & his dad (the coach).

SHARPAY EVANS - Mezzo Soprano, Female:
The dramatic and self-centered President of the Drama Club who is always the star of the school musicals.  Sharpay is tenacious, over-the-top, and demanding, but she also knows how to get on people’s good side, in order to get what she wants.  She is the “alpha twin” in contrast with her brother, Ryan, and has a huge, unrequited crush on Troy Bolton.  Sharpay should be a strong singer and dancer with solid acting skills.

RYAN EVANS - Tenor, Male:
Sharpay’s fraternal twin brother (and VP of the Drama Club) who loves to sing and dance as a part of the musicals.  Ryan generally follows Sharpay’s orders and lets her have the spotlight, but he longs to step out of her shadow.  He should be an energetic and talented singer & dancer.

TAYLOR MCKESSIE - Mezzo Soprano, Female:
The organized & focused president of the Science Club.  Taylor is very confident and assertive, and is determined to have Gabriella join the Science Decathlon team so that they can finally win! She has a secret soft-spot for Chad, but would never admit in public that she likes a jock.

CHAD DANFORTH - Tenor, Male:
One of Troy’s best friends & a member of the basketball team, Chad is obsessed with sports.  He is super focused on winning the championship game, but slowly starts to realize that there’s more to life than basketball (for example, his friendship with Troy & his crush on Taylor).

MS. DARBUS -  Female, Any vocal range:
East High’s eccentric yet overly passionate drama teacher.  Ms. Darbus never stops trying to enrich her students’ lives with the magic of live theatre, and her love for the arts should be obvious from every one of her lines.  She should have great comedic timing and be able to hilariously argue with Coach Bolton.

COACH BOLTON - Male, any vocal range:
The stern basketball coach & Troy’s dad.  He lost the championship game when he was a kid and wants a second chance through his son.  Deep down, he loves Troy very much, but often times he speaks to him more as a coach than a dad.  This role should be played by a strong actor who can comedically argue with Ms. Darbus.

JACK SCOTT - Male, any vocal range:
The student who does the school morning announcements, Jack Scott has a larger-than-life personality, somewhat like a radio DJ. He should be able to do quirky voices and have a unique energy to keep the show’s events moving and introduce each scene.

KELSI NIELSEN - Female, Mezzo Soprano:
The student-composer of the winter musical “Juliet and Romeo,'' Kelsi has a shy demeanor, but cannot deal with Sharpay’s self-centered attitude. At the beginning of the show, she freezes up whenever she is confronted by other people, but her friendship with Troy and Gabriella helps her to gain the confidence to put Sharpay in her place.

ZEKE BAYLOR - Male, Tenor:
Troy’s other best pal, Zeke is a sweet & slightly simple-minded basketball player.  He has two secrets: a love for baking & a crush on Sharpay!  When he finds out that Troy is interested in other things besides basketball, Zeke follows suit and tells everyone about his passion for baking pastries! Solo part in “Stick to the Status Quo”.

MARTHA COX - Female, Mezzo Soprano:
An energetic member of the Science Club, Martha Cox has a secret passion for hip-hop dancing.  Troy and Gabriella coming out as performers has made her feel like she can share this passion with her brainiac friends.  Solo part in “Stick to the Status Quo”.

RIPPER - Male, Tenor:
A chill skater dude who announces that he also plays the cello! Ripper is yet another kid who feels confident enough to share his secrets once Troy and Gabriella reveal that they’re more than their cliques.  Solo part in “Stick to the Status Quo”.

MS. TENNY - Female, Any vocal range:
East High’s science teacher, who notices Gabriella’s smarts early on.

JAMES - An auditioner who cannot sing on key or remember the lyrics
PERFORMANCE ART KIDS - Auditioners who use dramatic movement in their audition

BRAINIACS - Any gender, any vocal range:

The athletes of East High, including Troy, Zeke, and Chad.
