History and Eligibility
The Drinkwater Community Leadership Award reminds us that many people knew Herb Drinkwater, often referred to as “Mr. Scottsdale”. No matter who he was speaking with, he had a wide smile, a warm demeanor, a friendly handshake and a gusto for life as extraordinary as an Arizona sunrise. The Honorable Herb Drinkwater was fearless. Business cards in hand, he was always willing to introduce Scottsdale to people who may be interested or willing to move their business to Scottsdale; he served more than 25 years as Scottsdale’s Mayor and as a City Council member. Herb is remembered as a friend to everyone; as mayor his approval rating was more than 90%! It is because of Herb’s on-purpose living and positive intent for the community he loved, that Scottsdale Leadership honors a community leader with the Drinkwater Award each year.
 
Nominations are based on contributions in:
- Community Service and Involvement: A record of community service which demonstrates commitment to Scottsdale Leadership’s core values: Engagement – Inclusion – Connection – Courage – Stewardship - Civility.
- Leadership: Recognition by others as a leader and a mentor. Accomplishment of significant goals through the person’s leadership. Leadership roles in various organizations or community initiatives.
- Consistency of Community Involvement: Contributions have been consistent over an extended period of time.
- Humanitarian Values: The nominee exemplifies warmth, caring, inclusivity and concern for those of varying backgrounds and constituencies, and can work well with different groups of people.

*Please note: Scottsdale Leadership alumni are not eligible for this award.

To Apply
Nominations may be made by all members of the community, including Scottsdale Leadership alumni. Nominations are accepted through this online form. Forms must be completed in full and submitted on or before Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Once submitted, nomination forms will be active in the year of submission, plus 2 years. After 3 years, an individual must be renominated using this form.

Letters of Support: once this form is submitted, members of the community may write letters of support for the nominee. Letters must be received by Wednesday, September 22, 2021 mailed to: Scottsdale Leadership, 10533 E. Lakeview Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258-4965 or submitted by email with the subject line: Drinkwater Letter of Support to info@scottsdaleleadership.org.
Award Presentation
Once the winner is notified, s/he will be asked to submit 10-15 photos for use in the awards video. The Nominator or nominee will be contacted to participate in a video shoot, a 2-4 hour time commitment.
