Foot Fitting 101 - The Love Jules Leather Shoe Company
In a perfect world, we'd have the pleasure of welcoming each and every one of our customers in-shop for a fitting (and beverage), but given you're not able to visit us (that's why you're receiving this info form), we've come up with a way to hold your hand through the fitting process - so you can do what we do here in our East Vancouver workshop, yourself (with a partner - highly recommended) from the comforts of your own home.

We're going to start-off by listing the handful of tools you're going to need handy to do this right. Don't worry, most of these (if not all) will commonly be found in most households' "junk" drawers. :) Then we'll proceed to walk you through how to properly (for our needs) measure the "LENGTH" of your feet, as well as the width (circumference) of each foot's "BALL", "WAIST", "INSTEP", "SHORT HEEL", and "ANKLE".

NOTE: This process is a little easier (and likely more accurate) with the assistance of a partner. So, if you can trouble a friend or family member to help you out for a quick 10 - 15 minute fitting, your feet will thank you for it.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything at all, just let us know and we'll get right back. We've left a "Questions/ Concerns/ Comments" section at bottom of this form, but emailing (info@lovejulesleather.com) works great too.

Thanks again for your support in what we're up to.
Can't wait to hear from ya!
Now get to measuring would ya?!

Tools You'll Need.
*
Required
Step 1 - Tracing Your Left Foot
*
Lay a single piece of paper flat on the (uncarpeted) ground. Place your left foot (centered) on the page. Please ensure you're wearing the thickness of sock you intend to wear (if applicable) with your shoes/ boots. Standing straight, and with evenly distributed weight (from toe to heel), with your fine-tipped ball point pen held straight up and down (perpendicular to the page), trace the circumference of your foot. Keep your foot in place, and move onto the next step ("Identifying Foot Anatomy").
Required
Step 2 - Identifying Foot Anatomy - BALL
*
Identify the center of your big toe's "knuckle" as well as your pinky toe's (which might be a little less obvious - just look for the widest point). On your piece of paper, with your Sharpie, make an obvious identifying mark next to each.
Required
Step 2 (cont'd) - Identifying Foot Anatomy - INSTEP
*
Your foot's instep (top) is opposite your foot's arch (bottom), and easily identified as the high-point of your foot. From that point, trace a straight line down along each side of your foot (which should be at the high point of your arch) with your finger and with your Sharpie make obvious marks at the points (inside and outside your foot) your finger hits the page.
Required
Step 2 (cont'd) - Identifying Foot Anatomy - WAIST
*
Identify the end (heel side) of your big toe's "knuckle" as well as your pinky toe's (which might be a little less obvious - just look for the widest point). On your piece of paper, with your Sharpie, make an obvious identifying mark next to each. Keep your foot in place, and move onto the next step ("Measuring your Ball, Waist and Instep").
Required
Step 3 - Measuring Your Ball, Waist, and Instep
*
Cut 10 shoulder length pieces of string.
Required
Step 3 (cont'd) - Measuring Your BALL, WAIST, and INSTEP
*
Now that you've identified the ball, waist, and instep of your left foot, we're all set to start measuring. Take 3 pieces of cut (shoulder length) string, and place under your foot at the marks you've made on either side of your foot. Starting with your BALL first, grab both ends of the string, either side of your foot, crossing the two pieces of string and pulling snugly over the top of your foot (please ensure the string is lying flat and taught underfoot - not bunched). Where the two pieces of string meet, mark each piece with your Sharpie. Remove the string and measure (in centimeters) the distance between the two marks (pulling your piece of string tight from end to end against your ruler). Note the width of your left foot's BALL on your piece of paper.
Required
*
WAIST - Following the same instructions as listed above (for measuring the ball of your left foot), note the width (in centimeters) of your left foot's WAIST on your piece of paper.
Required
*
INSTEP - Following the same instructions as listed above (for measuring the ball of your left foot), note the width (in centimeters) of your left foot's INSTEP on your piece of paper. Keep your foot in place, and move onto the next step ("Measuring Your Short Heel").
Required
Step 4 - Measuring Your SHORT HEEL
*
Take a single piece of cut string and place under heel at the point where your heel rounds and touches ground (just). Grab both ends of the string, either side of your foot, pull up and over the top of your foot (snugly) crossing where shin meets foot. Where the two pieces of string meet, mark each piece with your Sharpie. Remove the string and measure (in centimeters) the distance between the two marks (pulling your piece of string tight from end to end against your ruler). Note the width (in centimeters) of your left foot's SHORT HEEL on your piece of paper. Keep your foot in place, and move onto the next step ("Measuring Your Ankle").
Required
Step 5 - Measuring Your ANKLE
*
Find the centre of your inner ankle bone. Place your middle finger on it. Place a second finger (index) above that one. From the place directly above your second finger, wrap the string around your ankle from back to front. Where the two pieces of string cross, mark each piece with your Sharpie. Remove the string and measure (in centimeters) the distance between the two marks (pulling your piece of string tight from end to end against your ruler). Note the width (in centimeters) of your left foot's ANKLE on your piece of paper. Keep your foot in place, and move onto the next step ("Measuring Your Foot's Length").
Required
Step 6 - Measuring Your Foot's LENGTH
*
You can FINALLY remove your foot from the page - the hard part's done! The final measurement we need you to take (for your left foot) is the LENGTH. Mark the two "high points" of your tracing, which will likely be the centre of your heel, and either the end of your big toe, 2nd toe, or middle toe - we're all different. With your ruler, draw a straight line between those two marks, then measure the length of that line. Note the LENGTH (in centimeters) of your left foot on your piece of paper.
Required
Step 7 - Repeat Steps 1 Through 6 For Your RIGHT Foot.

STEP 8 - List All Your Measurements HERE.
You're done. Congratulations, and thanks (to both you and your measuring buddy!) for taking the time to get us what we need to 'craft you a pair of shoes/ boots that will fit like an absolute dream.

STEP 9 - SCAN and EMAIL Us Your Tracings *
If you don't have access to a scanner, that's not surprising. Simply snap a picture of your tracings (try to make sure your phone is as flat and parallel to your piece of paper as possible) and email to info@lovejulesleather.com. NOTE: There are plenty of simple (and free) scanning apps out there, and though I'm saying it's absolutely necessary you clutter up your phone with one for this particular one-time exercise, they do work great... and it might unexpectedly come in handy down the road (Do it).

STEP 10 - 3D SCAN for your feet with "FTSY"
*
NEW in January 2020. This is by far the coolest part the the fit process, but it's also unchartered territory for us, so we'll be running it in parallel with our tried and true old-school string method, as listed above. We've partnered with local smart-wear tech firm "FTSY", who've developed a cutting-edge 3D foot scanning application AND licenced it to us for this release ONLY, on a trial basis. The scan process is quick, user friendly, and we think the resulting scan and analytics could help us fill any and all fit gaps, so if you wouldn't mind helping us out with one... final... chore, we'd really appreciate it! Now, you will need an Iphone 6 (or newer), so if that's not you, no worries, you can skip this final step.

Questions/ Concerns/ Comments
Your work here is done! Thanks again for your help in making this happen - know the fitting process can be time intensive and tedious, but... it'll be sooooooo worth it (promise). If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever just let us know and we'll be back in touch ASAP. Thank you! J and J
