The Division of Analytical Chemistry provides travel awards for Younger Chemists (under age 35) to travel to a meeting to present the results of their research, either orally or in the form of a poster. Eligible meetings include: National or Regional ACS meetings, Eastern Analytical Symposium, SciX, and other meetings of analytical nature.
The Division of Analytical Chemistry is strongly devoted to enhancing the diversity of the analytical chemistry field at all levels. Through inclusion of diverse individuals, scientific problems are better approached and solved, by bringing together scientists with different training, backgrounds and perspectives. Therefore, individuals who are Underrepresented Minorities (URMs), First-Generation Younger Professionals or other diverse scientists who may not have previously been able to participate in professional meetings are particularly encouraged to apply. Through this program, the Division will promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Respect (DEI&R) by increasing the exposure, engagement, and active participation of younger scientists from diverse backgrounds in the field of Analytical Chemistry.
Award recipients will be reimbursed for registration, travel, and accommodation expenses (up to $1000) after the meeting. The reimbursement process will be outlined in the award notification. Awards are subject to availability of funds, and selection of awardees will be based on the following criteria: (1) impact of meeting attendance, (2) scientific merit of the planned presentation, (3) relevance of the meeting to division mission, and (4) nomination letter from the advisor/supervisor.
Eligibility
Applicants must be younger than the age of 35 and hold a Bachelor’s degree in their field. (Undergraduate research students are encouraged to apply for the Kolthoff travel award.) Awardees must be members of the Division of Analytical Chemistry at the time of the award. An individual is eligible to receive travel award funds only if that person actually presents an abstract (poster or oral) at the requested meeting. If the awardee does not present an abstract at the meeting (e.g., failure to submit an abstract, nonselection of the abstract, personal decision to change travel plans), then no division travel award funds will be provided.
How to apply
A completed application consists of this application form, including a copy of the abstract submitted (or to be submitted) for presentation, and a nomination letter written by the individual’s research advisor or supervisor. The nomination letter should be submitted directly by the advisor via e-mail to Prof. Michelle Kovarik (
michelle.kovarik@trincoll.edu). The subject line of the email should state “Letter of Recommendation - [Applicant’s Name] for Younger Chemists Travel Grant.”
Applications will be considered twice a year, due May 1 and November 1 (complete applications only including supporting letters). Awardees will be notified within 45 days of the application deadline. All travel grant recipients are required to acknowledge the Division in a slide or on their poster as a condition of accepting the award.
