OPENING PRAYER: Let us begin this lesson by gathering at your prayer corner. We will be doing an opening prayer at the beginning of each lesson. The opening prayer helps us to feel closer to God as we learn about, and prepare to receive, the sacrament of First Eucharist.
INTRODUCTION: Preparing to receive First Communion is a big deal. And no matter how many times we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, it should always be a big deal. Jesus comes to us in a unique way in the Eucharist. When He comes, we receive Him into our body and our soul. This is a very beautiful, personal, and intimate sacrament and something we should never take for granted! It is such a holy, joyful occasion. Our souls become the bride of Christ. That is why girls wear white dresses and boys wear suits. Pope Francis, calls the Eucharist the "Sacrament of Love" as "...it constitutes the source of the Church’s life itself. From this Sacrament of love, in fact, flows every authentic journey of faith, of communion, and of witness." Today's lesson is the first of six lessons in the "Together in Jesus: First Communion" sacrament preparation program that will help you to prepare to receive this "Sacrament of Love." So let's get started!
I BELONG TO A LOVING COMMUNITY:  First Eucharist is an unforgettable day! It is a benchmark moment in every Catholic's journey into full membership in the Church, a community of believers. Take a moment now and read the paragraph on page 1 in your First Eucharist Lesson 1. When you are done reading ask your Mom or Dad to answer the question "I believe in Jesus because..."  Listen carefully to your parents answer and write it in the space provided on page 1. It is important for you to know that others believe in Jesus, and why, and to know that you belong to that community of believers, the Church.
THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION:  Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation are known as the three Sacraments of Initiation. Baptism welcomes new members into the Church and bathes us with water and the life-giving power of Jesus' Death and Resurrection. First Eucharist brings Catholics together to share the Body and Blood of Christ, the regular nourishment of the Church and the heart and summit of the Church's life. And Confirmation seals us with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthens our bond with the Church. Take a moment now to turn to page 2 and 3 in your lesson and read more about each of these sacraments.  You can also refer to your "7 Sacraments" section in the  "My Mass Book" you received in your First Eucharist bag to read more about these three sacraments.
BROTHER FRANCIS AND THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION: Now let's take a moment to see what Brother Francis has to tell us about the Sacraments of Initiation. When you are done, proceed to the next section and complete the questions.

Great job!! If you recall in your January 10th Lesson ,"The Baptism of the Lord", we read about our Lord's Baptism and about the sacrament of Baptism itself. The Sacrament of Baptism is an important first step in our faith journey. At Baptism, God's special light comes into our lives, and we become children of God. It is one of the most special days in our lives. In that lesson we talked about Baptism being a special sacrament. One that celebrates our "spiritual birth" into God's family. And just like your real birth, which is celebrated with a birthday every year, so should we celebrate our "spiritual birth" each year. I asked you in that lesson when you had been baptized and the name you had been given. You should be able to use that information now to complete the "My Baptism" section on page 2 in this lesson. When you are done locate your sticker sheet that came with your "Together in Jesus" lessons and find the "shell and water" sticker and place it in the appropriate place on page 2.  Great job!
FAMILY ACTIVITY: WE GATHER AND CELEBRATE: Our closing activity for your first lesson is a prayer ritual that celebrates the beginning of your preparation for First Eucharist. You will need to gather together with your Mom or Dad, or both, to complete the prayer ritual. But before you begin you will need to print out "The Lord's Prayer" sheet that is located in the lesson link section. You will also need a bible, or prayer book, and a piece of string or yarn. When you have all of that gathered, take a couple of minutes to color the picture on "The Lord's Prayer" sheet and to fill in your name in the blank provided. When you are done roll the prayer sheet up like a scroll, tie it with the ribbon/string and place it next to the Bible/Prayer Book. Now you are ready to begin your prayer ritual! Turn to page 4 in your lesson. Have your Mom or Dad play the part of "Leader" and "Parents" and you will play the part of the "Children". Read through the prayer and perform the actions indicated. When you are done draw a picture of the way you think you will look when receiving First Eucharist.
Super excellent job! You have just completed your first "First Eucharist" lesson! Way to go! Now go back to your sticker sheet and find the "Lesson 1" sticker and place it in the box on page 4 at the bottom of the page (see picture above). And you are done! Have a blessed week!
