Kahkwa Bridge Project

The Kahkwa Bridge was built in 1920 to carry automobile and pedestrian traffic across Kahkwa Boulevard over Ravine Drive.  The bridge was demolished by the City in 2021 due to its advanced deteriorating condition and safety concerns.  Based on a neighborhood survey performed by the City, most residents requested a new vehicular bridge with enhanced sidewalks for pedestrians and shared lane markings for bicycles.

As you prepare the project's specifications that will be put out for biddings, I urge you to include very specific requirements for remediation of the area after the bridge is built. Topsoil and grass seeding is not enough. New trees should be planted to replace those removed in the construction process. Native shrubs and other plantings should be required, not only to stabilize the banks, but to begin the habitat restoration process. I emphasize native species, not non-native (invasive) species.
