The Representation Program at Rubbish Comedy
Cis-gendered straight White males have dominated the world of comedy.
For far too long, they have established the value system, the currency of exchange, and who can participate in the comedy economy. This has created a huge gap in diverse perspectives being valued, empowered, and employed in comedy.
It is our firm belief that success SHOULD NOT be dependent on diverse individuals being a "dominant culture fit."
The Representation Program at Rubbish Comedy isn't JUST about diversity, equity, and inclusion for "culture fits." It is about FULL Representation, comity, and "culture adds."
Underrepresented voices will not just receive free comedy education and otherwise be forgotten. They will be prioritized, elevated, and echoed in the Rubbish Comedy community and far beyond.
Rubbish Comedy will do this by:
1) providing scholarships to students to eliminate the pressure of financing this education;
2) enabling direct mentorship, coaching, and support for students to grow and flourish --- with the goal of turning amateur passion into professional advancement;
3) equipping students to become expert comedians, as performers, teachers, directors, and recognized leaders within the comedy community at-large;
4) providing opportunities for Representation Program leaders to continue the important work of this program for future generations of comedians in New York City.
