Facilitators: Ching-Yu Huang, Assistant Professor, Biology and Faculty Fellow for Inclusive Teaching, CTLE; Allison A. Johnson, Associate Professor, Bioinformatics and Program Director, HHMI Inclusive Excellence in STEM

Based on data collected through an HHMI-funded Institute on Inclusive Teaching in STEM at VCU, we will share strategies addressing barriers and challenges to inclusive teaching identified by VCU faculty, and provide some resources for reflection as well as teaching strategies that students have reported increased their sense of belonging in the classroom. This workshop will be applicable to all areas.
Inclusive teaching checklist to increase faculty self awareness
First day activity to know, share and normalize the diversity of learners in your classroom
First day activity to write and share an syllabus statement describing inclusion in your classroom
Self-reflection and small group discussion about implicit bias in the classroom
Planning for course content to include a diverse set of examples

Self-awareness is necessary preparation for inclusive teaching. Workshop registrants will receive an email message July 13th (two days ahead of workshop) containing two small pre-workshop homework assignments.
