Prospective Board Member

The Friends of Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation (DBA Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation and/or STR) is recruiting people whose passion and commitment match our own. We have places on our Board for those eager to become advocates for individuals with disabilities and their families.

As a board member, you will play a vital role in supporting the fundraising efforts, policies, and overall success of the organization. While day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Founded in 2021, The Friends of Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation, also known as Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was formed to improve the quality of life and social well-being for individuals with disabilities and their families through community recreation. Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation provides social, sport, leisure and recreational activities, events, and programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Job Description & Expectations 

The board has a fundamental, legal responsibility to provide oversight and accountability for the organization. Referred to as the board’s “fiduciary” responsibility, the board must ensure that the organization is appropriately stewarding the resources entrusted to it and following all legal and ethical standards. True oversight and accountability go beyond these core practices and require active engagement from each individual board member.


Term

  • General board members serve a three-year term and may serve additional consecutive terms without limits.
  • Officers serve two-year terms with the option for reelection.

Oversight

  • Board members must know and follow the organization’s mission, by-laws, policies, programs, and needs and assist in policy review and development through thoughtful preparation and active involvement.
  • Board members must contribute to the strategic and organizational planning and assess its own performance as the governing body of Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Board members will select and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director.
  • Board members will sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year, if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.
  • Board members must maintain confidentiality about all internal matters Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation.

Financial Accountability

  • Board members must ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management.
  • Board members should be able to read and interpret the organization’s financial statements including a balance sheet and income statement.
  • Board members must review and approve the annual budget.

Fundraising and Outreach

  • Board members must participate in fundraising and special events.
  • Board members should give a meaningful personal financial donation.
  • Board members should leverage connections, networks, and resources to assist in securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary to advance Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation’s mission.
  • Board members must work to enhance the development, growth, and public image of Sequoia Therapeutic Recreation.

Board Recruitment and Development

  • Board members should actively assist in recruiting and cultivating new board members.
  • Board members ensure that the board composition reflects the organizations’ needs.

Meeting Attendance

  • Board members must make it a priority to attend all board meetings. Without attending meetings, a board member is not able to participate in educated and independent decision making. Board service is a commitment and accepting a board position means the meetings must take priority over other obligations except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Board members should prepare for and conscientiously participate fully in board meetings and committees.
