Mission:
To reclaim the term “Culture of Care”, make a living definition, and provide a framework for executing it on campus
Objectives:
- Create dialogue around the term “Culture of Care”
- Design a framework for how “Culture of Care” can be applied to ALL members of the Rice community
- Establish a formal definition for “Culture of Care”
The Existing Definitions:
- “Our community is known, and defined, by the care we take for (ourselves and) others.” President Leebron
- “Culture of care exists among you (students)” and it is an extraordinary part of our campus identity. Dean Hutchinson
- Culture of Care is a guiding philosophy that is centered on serving the greater good and providing students with a framework for living and working together at Rice. All members of the campus community are asked to be active partners in fostering a caring environment.
The Major Problems:
- The vast majority of students on the Fall 2018 SAS felt that the most prominent place they see “Culture of Care” is in the context of publics, social events, parties, and alcohol.
- Identified issues with Culture of Care as it relates to:
- Mental Health
- Sexual Assault Prevention
- Inclusion of Minority Groups
- There is no formal definition of “Culture of Care” on any official campus website
- There is no structure/guideline to apply “Culture of Care” in different situations
- Students do not want “Culture of Care” to go away
Applications are due Sunday November 17th at 11:59pm. Questions should go to co-chair Grace Wickerson at
sapres@rice.edu.
