PFD Sizing and Fit
When going paddling, a Personal Floation Device (PFD) is an essential piece of safety gear.   That PFD must be the right size so that it fits correctly and keeps the wearer safe.  It is very important to make sure the PFD is the right size before going near the water.  You do not want the test of fit to be an actual life and death emergency.
To make sure a PFD is the right size and fits properly:
First, check the label on the PFD to make sure it is the right size and can support you in the water.
Then, before going near the water, put the PFD on and check to make sure it fits correctly.  This image, from Scouts Canada, explains how to check that your PFD is the right size (fit).
After checking the label and fit it is a good idea to confirm that the PFD is the right size by wearing it in the water.  This image, from the US Army Corps of Engineers, shows what will happen in the water if the PFD is too small, too big or just right.
This test always be done in the safest location possible and under supervision (for example, local swimming pool with a lifeguard watching) since there is a chance that the PFD may not work correctly.  You may want to try swimming in the PFD, to make sure you know how that feels.  You may also want to try it out wearing your paddling clothes (shorts, t-shirt, hat and shoes).
