Survey of Student Experience
Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey.

The Duke Bridge, a creative media outlet for and by women of color, would like to better understand the BIPOC experience at Duke. This survey is anonymous, but will give us a better sense for the lives and potential adversity that Duke's diverse communities face.

The survey statistics will be used as a frame of reference in our podcast series: "Bridging the Gap", which hopes to touch on the experiences of Duke students. No individual information will be used, just the general statistics.

If you checked yes to any of the boxes below and would be interested in sharing your experience, please sign up to participate in our podcast series as a guest speaker.

Definitions:
Discrimination: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. This can be covert, someone who is very clearly uncomfortable with you or who refuses to speak or interact with you on the basis of race or identity. This can be overt in the form of slurs, hate speech, or blatant mistreatment.

Microaggressions: a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group.

Stereotyping: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person. These tend to be misrepresentations or misconceptions about a person, their way of life, or their personality based upon their racial or sexual identity.

Sexism: prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.

Social Isolation: The complete separation or segregation of someone from another person or a group of people. Made to feel alone, inferior, or out of place.

Tokenism: the practice or policy of making no more than a token effort or gesture, as in offering opportunities to minorities equal to those of the majority. Those in tokenistic positions may be the only or one of the only representatives of a particular group present and, as a result, may feel made to act as the representative for all members of that particular group in discussions.
