1) Dynamic Listening: A Practice for Solo and Partnered Dancing
with Karla Quintero & Belinda He
Featured Choreographer in Program B: Cuatro Vientos FLACC 2023

MONDAY Oct. 23
TIME: 10am-12pm
Location: Dance Mission Theater, Studio 3
$20

Listening is about more than just what you receive: it can be a rigorous practice that requires empathy, respect, and openness to arrive at understanding, leading to the potential for a larger dynamic range. It allows for precision and intimacy (with yourself and with others) when dancing. In response to professional dance training that can often move us further away from listening by focusing intensely on the doing, we ask “What virtuosity is possible when our daily practice prioritizes listening over aesthetics and form?”

In this workshop, we will improvise, “trying-on” and experimenting with practices we are researching that support collaborative dancemaking and dancing with ease and power by yourself and in connection and contact with others. You can expect to work individually and with partners to access areas of your body that may currently be dormant, learn more about your habits, and gain skills for working with partners while moving together in contact or dialogue through space. We will work in the space where touch, sensation, and listening intertwine, opening the door for new possibilities in our shared bodies.

2)  Vortex, a Sacred Dance
with Christopher "Unpezverde" Nuñez
Featured Choreographer in Program A: Cuatro Vientos FLACC 2023

TUESDAY- Oct. 24
TIME: 10am-12:30pm
Location: Dance Mission Theater, Studio 3
$25

Description: A vortex is commonly known as the rotating, whirling or circular motion of fluid around a common centerline. Throughout history, humans have drawn on the principles of the vortex to  induce a trance state, an altered form of consciousness, and psychospiritual embodiment. In this class, disabled and non-disabled participants will connect somatic, creative, and intellectual practices to delve into questions and experiences of body/mind ancestry. We will practice the different mechanisms and concepts of vortex motion such as velocity distribution, vorticity (curvature), and circulation in relationship to proprioception, anatomy planes (sagittal, transverse, frontal) and axes of movement.

Needs: Comfortable clothes, water, journal.

WEDNESDAY- Oct. 25

This class prompts us to enjoy the wonderful sensation of existing in the off-center and riding rise and fall of our movements. We start class acknowledging and understanding our vertical through a series of technical exercises. Once we start traveling through space we play more with falling, counter directions, and utilizing momentum in our favor, concluding in a phrase that lets you explore these sensations in a codified pattern.

Join Joey Navarrete-Medina (he/they) for Embodied Pilates Exploration, a unique approach to Pilates that combines strength building with an experiential laboratory for movement. This class explores strategies for empowering the autonomous decision-making body, encouraging an expanded range of motion and ease of movement.

We prioritize anatomical principles, leverage imagery, engage all body systems, and challenge balance, spatial awareness, connectivity, and clarity. Our 'choose what's for you' approach to group classes reveals your most genuine movement potential and allows you to embark on a Pilates adventure tailored to your unique needs.

Joey's intention for each class is to keep it flowing and to inspire each student to work 'economically,' which means learning to pause and make mindful choices in real-time. The goal is to become the most capable, agile, and resilient version of yourself through this heavily Pilates-inspired class.
