In Words and Color: Pairing Poetry and Art for Analysis
Presented by Robin Aufses and sponsored by Marina Litvinskaya of Bedford, Freeman and Worth
Henry James famously said, “To the art of the brush the novel must return.” The same is true for poetry; the best poets--of the past and of the present moment--use the tools of the painter to create worlds that are even more compressed than we find in novels. Learning how to analyze visual texts provides training for the analysis of written texts, especially, perhaps, poetry. This session will introduce strategies for close-reading canonical works of poetry and art, as well as complex poetry and visual texts by diverse poets and artists who are writing and painting today. We will look at pairs of poems and visual texts to demonstrate the ways those pairings help students refine their close-reading skills.
