Unlocking Racine: a year-long series about our housing crisis
Starting in September we'll launch a year-long series about housing in Racine. As part of the project, we're taking a survey of Racine residents who have experienced housing instability.

Here's what we know so far:

Of the 17,500 students attending RUSD, 62 percent are eligible to receive free and reduced priced lunches, 20 percent -- 1 in 5 children -- are living in poverty and 1 in 4 children live in households that are housing cost burdened. Over 700 children are homeless. And of those who are homeless -- 3 out of four are children of color.
Children who are either living in homes where they are housing insecure or are homeless are more likely to experience mental health issues, poor nutrition and statically don't do as well in school.
That was in the 2019-2020 school year, according to data compiled by the Center for Public Integrity. What are things like now?
