Saturdays are our most common time to do jobs with our apprentices. When an apprentice joins us on
Wednesday evenings, we worship together and discuss upcoming jobs. It is critical that we always have mentors "on-call" every Saturday to assist the apprentices with the jobs discussed and assigned on Wednesday night.
So, what does it mean to sign-up to be "on-call" for a Saturday?
Simply this... set aside one Saturday a month from 9a-12p. A volunteer from Christ our Anchor will contact you on the Thursday morning before your assigned Saturday with all the information you need to volunteer (i.e. times, job details, list of tasks, apprentice's name, etc.). Also, if there is not a job to be done on your Saturday, we will contact you by Thursday morning to let you know.
Where, when, and how long do we meet?
For most of our Saturday jobs, we meet at 9am at the First Wesleyan Church on 611 Shelby Ave. We'll drive to the job site to do the job together, work for 1-3 hours, and the head back to the church. At times, we will meet at the job location at 9am if the apprentice has their own means of transportation.
What is my job as a mentor?
All that's required of you is to be present and share God's love with our apprentices. You don't need any special skills (the apprentice has those). A mentor's job is to simply chat and assist the apprentice. Our apprentices are hungry for fellowship. They need someone to listen to their story and care.
What if I can't make it?
No worries. Life happens. If you realize you aren't going to be able to make it on your Saturday, just let us know. Each mentor will be given access to our mentor database, so it will be easy for you to coordinate swapping a Saturday with another mentor.
Can I sign up with a friend?
Absolutely! We completely understand that it might be intimidating to do this alone. Taking a friend along is a great way to add a third person to an existing friendship, to the Glory of God!
So, pray about it, find a Saturday each month you can offer to the Lord, pull out your old jeans and some work boots, and consider joining us for fellowship and worship on Wednesdays. Your presence can make a huge difference in someone's life!
