Q1 & 2: Option Selection (2022-23)
At ECVS, junior high students participate in complimentary courses or commonly referred to options. You will be placed in a new option every quarter, for a total of 4 options next year.  

Options will run at the following times each week:

Wednesdays - Grade 9s Blocks 4 and 5

Instructions:

Please read through the following option descriptions that will be offered at ECVS during the 2021-22 school year. Select your top FIVE choices from the options list. Please note that course fees have been included in the descriptions.

**You will sign up for Quarter 3 and Quarter 4 Options in December.

CTF Course Descriptions:

Art

This course is open to students with little or no past experience and to those who wish to expand their artistic talents! Students will take inspiration from the world around them, cultural traditions, and famous artists to create both drawings and compositions. Students will gain an understanding of the elements of art, experiment with various types of media, and investigate artistic styles of the past and modern times. Creations will incorporate water colour, paint, chalk, pencil, and pastels. Students will have the opportunity to display their artwork throughout the term and in a school-wide art show. This course has a $25 fee per student.


Culinary Arts (Foods)

In this option, students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to use a variety of food preparation techniques to plan and prepare nutritious, tasty and attractive foods. Students will critically think, work as a team and use time management in a kitchen setting. Students will also develop knowledge skills and attitudes that have immediate and future applications in their personal and family lives, as well as in local and global environments.  There will be a $30 fee per student.


Driver's Ed Prep

Getting your license can be a daunting task, and in order to drive a motor vehicle legally and safely in Alberta you must first obtain a Class 7 learner’s license. Drivers Ed Prep will guide students through important information identified in the Alberta Driver’s Guide while also teaching students the basics to driving and maintaining their vehicles.


French as a Second Language (FSL)

Bonjour mes amis! Welcome to French Second Language. A class where we explore the French language and culture! Together we will learn and expand our basic knowledge, improve our reading, writing and oral comprehension. Exploration through movies, stories, stations, music, and much more! This course has a $10 fee per student.


Leadership

Students in this option will spend their time working with communities in Beaumont. Some of our volunteering will take place at locations such as the senior’s home, a local daycare, or a nearby elementary school.  You will also learn about your own leadership style, improve teamwork skills and work on projects within the school community.


Outdoor Education

This CTF student-centered program is designed to enhance the participant’s learning ability, self-confidence, and self-discipline. The Outdoor Education course is an adventure in excellence where individuals can challenge themselves mentally, physically, socially, emotionally and culturally. The students will learn to utilize the outdoors as a classroom and incorporate many skills to live an active and healthy lifestyle. This course has a $10 fee per student. 

The Ongoing History of New Music

Ongoing History of New Music looks at things from the alt-rock universe to hip hop, from artist profiles to various thematic explorations. Students will explore music through the eyes of the bands and artists they listen to but they’ll also have the opportunity to play some music too. 


STEAM

Come and explore the fun and creative side of Science Technology Engineering Art and Math!  This class will focus on a wide variety of student-lead projects including indoor gardening (hydroponics, Indigenous medicine gardens, space gardens and sprouting microgreens), digital art (3D printing, graphic design, DIY stickers), coding and robotics (Micro:bits, Sphero, Hummingbird, VR, Scratch), taking on engineering design challenges, science or math-themed art projects, exploring local ecosystems and so much more!  Depending on the quarter, we will learn from Indigenous Elders to plant, grow and harvest medicinal plants to make soaps, salves, and other home-made remedies to save our astronauts on Mars!  Projects and challenges will vary depending on the season but YOU will get to have a say in what we explore together! This course has a $10 fee per student.


Woodworking

Students will learn the tools, techniques, and materials of the wood shop through hands-on learning. Students will learn to use major power tools through the design and construction of a shelf, and time permitting a CO2 dragster. This course will have a $40 fee per student.
