Waianae Makahiki Hoʻolauleʻa Dec. 16, 2023 - RSVP Form
Aloha mai kākou!  On December 16, 2023, from 3pm to 9pm ʻOhana Kilo Hōkū is hosting a Makahiki Hoʻolauleʻa at the invitation of Nā Keiki o Ka Mōʻī Canoe Club at Pōkaʻī Bay.  If you are interested in attending the event as a guest or a volunteer, please fill out the form below so that we may best accommodate you.

The Makahiki Hoʻolauleʻa celebrates the Makahiki season and Hawaiʻi’s heritage of celestial observations, both past and present. The event will feature Polynesian Navigation and star compass demonstrations, Makahiki games, solar observations, a community showcase during the day, followed by traditional and telescope observations of the rising Makaliʻi (Pleiades) at night, which traditionally marks the start of the Makahiki season. The event will also include educational programming about the Makahiki festival, Hawaiian constellations, moʻolelo of the sky and land, and astronomy demonstrations. We are especially grateful to the Royal Order who will perform the annual ceremonies for opening Makahiki at Kūʻīlioloa Heiau located at Pōkaʻi Bay.

Heiau EtiquetteIt is customary to place an offering of a closed lei on the altar, as your gift. As a sacred site, respect should be paid by proper behavior.  Visitors must stay off of the rocks and not move or remove anything from the temple.  Take all litter with you, including something somebody else might have left behind.

Logistic DetailsPlease feel free to bring your ʻohana, food, a blanket, water, tent, and beach kine tingz.  During the day there is no shade.  We will have some tents, but feel free to bring shade. Please also bring a red flashlight or headlamp as it will be dark and we want to protect everyone's night vision with red lights. This event will be photographed and filmed.  By participating in this event you are consenting to the release of your voice and image.
