CHAPTER 5 -THE DILEMMA-
Dawan tells Kwai about the discussion in Noi's house and that they do not support Dawan going to the city. Kwai is as surprised as the others who thought Noi and Ghan love and admire the city.
Kwai then tells Dawan he might get to replace her because he came in second place after Dawan in the examination. Kwai had pressured the teacher into telling him the results.
So, if Dawan does not get to go to the city, Kwai will get to replace her. The two siblings walk towards their house, talking and arguing about the concept of the scholarship and the responsibility involved. Dawan tells Kwai that he has another chance next year.
Both are aware of the importance of education and the need to bring changes to their village. But, Kwai feels that Dawan is impractical and will not succeed in her quest to try and  change the village as, in his own words "You are only a girl".
At that point, Dawan stops and glares at her brother with clenched fists.
However, he has made a promise but not wholeheartedly, not to tell their father about his second placing.
When Dawan and mother return home after their visit to Noi's house, Kwai comes running to catch up with them. Why do you think Kwai is so excited to talk them?
